p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Long time no see. Where you been?/p p strongRaven/strong: Irsquo;ve been grounded/p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: With such a beautiful wingspan, how could that be possible?/p p strongRaven/strong: Well, it happened. I found a laptop one day out in the open, just landed on it. I started pecking way at the keys and this thing came on the screen./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: What was it?/p p strongRaven/strong: Facebook/p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: What do you think of it?/p p strongRaven/strong: I donrsquo;t know. One thingrsquo;s for sure, Irsquo;m not getting as much exercise as before./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Itrsquo;s addictive isnrsquo;t it?/p p strongRaven/strong: Who you span data-scayt_word="tellin’" data-scaytid="1"tellinrsquo;/span? The whole thing is wearing down my beak. I canrsquo;t peckhellip;I canrsquo;t poke. I get nauseated whenever i see Mark span data-scayt_word="Zuckerberg's" data-scaytid="2"Zuckerberg#39;s/span face. He span data-scayt_word="kinda" data-scaytid="3"kinda/span looks like Ronald McDonald without makeup. Irsquo;m becoming as useless as my Facebook friends./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: How many Facebook friends do you have?/p p strongRaven/strong: I lost track. A thousand, maybe more./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Thatrsquo;s a lot/p p strongRaven/strong: I donrsquo;t know any of lsquo;em though. A lot of lsquo;em look like they hang out at those occupy protests./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Hang out?/p p strongRaven/strong: Yeah, hang out. They got nothing else to occupy themselves with. I mean, I#39;ve been out occupying these buildings for a long time on all this stolen land. I#39;ve been crying out for a long time. I#39;m sure you#39;ve heard my voice echoing in the halls of your mind or the chambers of your heart. span data-scayt_word="Kaaaaaaaaaa" data-scaytid="4"Kaaaaaaaaaa/span! span data-scayt_word="Kaaaaaaaaa" data-scaytid="5"Kaaaaaaaaa/span! Hey, that ain#39;t just span data-scayt_word="ka-ka" data-scaytid="6"ka-ka/span, you know? Things have been in disarray for a long time. What have i gotten? An occasional scrap. But people are waking up and that#39;s a good thing./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: You must be busy with friend requests/p p strongRaven/strong: All the time. I got politicians waiting in line to be my friend. The San Francisco mayoral candidates, what a crowd. I havenrsquo;t span data-scayt_word="friended" data-scaytid="7"friended/span them yet. I canrsquo;t keep up with all of lsquo;em. You got Lee, Yee, Woo and Chow./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: I think you mean Lee, Yee and span data-scayt_word="Chiu" data-scaytid="8"Chiu/span/p p strongRaven/strong: Maybe so, but itrsquo;s interesting. Look at the field. Dennis Herrera looks like Jay Leno with a hangover. John span data-scayt_word="Avalos" data-scaytid="10"Avalos/span has hair that can withstand hurricane winds. span data-scayt_word="Dufty" data-scaytid="11"Dufty/span likes span data-scayt_word="Muni" data-scaytid="12"Muni/span and animals. Leland Yee looks much taller on TV. David span data-scayt_word="Chiu" data-scaytid="9"Chiu/span looks like a bank teller. Jeff span data-scayt_word="Adachi" data-scaytid="14"Adachi/span could easily do Menrsquo;s span data-scayt_word="Wearhouse" data-scaytid="15"Wearhouse/span commercials and Terry Baum looks like she spends much time composting./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: What about Ed Lee?/p p strongRaven/strong: I prefer Jet Li/p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Any last thoughts?/p p strongRaven/strong: Yeah, that brother thatrsquo;s running for president, the republican, McCain. He needs to hang it up./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Donrsquo;t you mean Herman emCain/em?/p p strongRaven/strong: Hey, i know what the hell I mean.nbsp; I don#39;t need you to tell me that.nbsp; But yeah, thatrsquo;s him. Blood needs to stick to making pan pizzas. Listening to him talkhellip;itrsquo;s no wonder the fast food workers of the world never get above minimum wage. And I was reading that he had some kind of sexual harassment thing going on a few years back that#39;s coming out in the media. I guess the brother was the Clarence Thomas of the pizza world./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: Who do you like?rsquo;/p p strongRaven/strong: I liked that brother who said the rents too high. That guy had fire and one span data-scayt_word="helluva" data-scaytid="16"helluva/span mustache. Come to think of it, he looked a little like Cecil Williams over at Glide. Which reminds me, I got to glide my ass over there for lunch. But you know, anything beats Para span data-scayt_word="Sailin" data-scaytid="17"Sailin/span./p p strongPoor Magazine/strong: You mean Sarah Palin?/p p strongRaven/strong: Same difference/p

p I am 10 years old and my name is Day. At 10:00 am my dad and me wentbr / to the Oakland General Strike. During it I saw a bunch of people withbr / bikes and people with disabilities. There span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="wer" data-scaytid="3"wer/span about a frac14; mile of tents!br / A lot, right? Most of the stores were shut down for the day./p p After we went to the government building but they locked us out. Webr / stood there, me, my dad and all the people with their wheelchairs.br / ldquo;Whose building? Our building!rdquo; we all repeated. Then we decided tobr / split up and blockade both entrances of the building. Some lady in thebr / crowd who was able-bodied handed me a bullhorn. I said into it,br / ldquo;2-4-6-8 Who do we appreciate? The 99%!rdquo; I felt proud to do that. Dadbr / even has a video of it./p p We were all tired so we went and got Chinese food. I go to a Chinesebr / school, so dad made me show off to the waiter. I hate showing off.br / When we got out I groaned ldquo;sour span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="stomach.”" data-scaytid="1"stomach.rdquo;/span We took BART back to Sanbr / Francisco and we went to a store and bought some span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="tums" data-scaytid="5"tums/span. It took like anbr / hour to hail a cab. The guy in the taxi hesitated before driving tobr / span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Bayview" data-scaytid="7"Bayview/span. Once I got home I went right to bed immediately. Sweet dreamsbr / and solidarity!br / nbsp;/p

  • Duck and Dodge

p Itrsquo;s funny the steps one takes to avoid or dodge people at any given moment. In my case, the ducking or dodgingmdash;stealth as I may bemdash;is often accompanied by guilt after the factmdash;along with the requisite post duck and dodge analysis. The duck and dodge is something I inherited from a family of duck and dodgers, namely my father and uncles. This is not to imply that the various members making up by beloved bloodline do not confront things head-onmdash;to the contrarymdash;for in their heydays my uncles amassed a string of knockouts on the street (before the days of span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="youtube" data-scaytid="1"youtube/span cell phones) that, if you lined the victims up lengthwise, would stretch from Fillmore Street to the Philippines. While I never witnessed any of these knockouts firsthand, I give them the proper reverence during their recounting by keeping my ears open and my mouth shut. /p pThe subtext or premise of the duck and dodge is avoiding a person (or persons) that one does not want to talk to at a given moment. My father termed this phenomenon: I donrsquo;t want to get into his shit. I remember his way with peoplemdash;polite and humblemdash;and he knew a lot of people. It seemed every time we went out he was running into someone he knew. Hersquo;d stop and engage in conversation that ranged from brief to long-winded. Most of the guysmdash;no, all the guys he knew were black; and my father, being Filipino, was black toomdash;black laughter, black talk, black walk, black style. There were times when dad didnrsquo;t want, for one reason or other, to engage in chit chat. I remember sitting in the car with him when he suddenly said, ldquo;Ah shithellip;I know this brother walking towards ushellip;emI donrsquo;t want to get into his shit right now/em. He then, in a beautifully choreographed move, covered his face with both hands as if in agony, contemplation or in the process of blowing his nose. He then parted his fingers slightly, peeking as if through a venetian blind. He kept looking until the brother passed bymdash;the coast being clear. It turned out that the brother owed my dad money. It was, I reasoned, a reverse duck and dodge, with the brother being able to save face while my father hid his. As dad explained, ldquo;Itrsquo;s not that Irsquo;m anti-social, I just didnrsquo;t want to get into the brotherrsquo;s shitrdquo;. /p pAnother master of the duck and dodge is my uncle Anthony. Uncle ldquo;Antrdquo; is a street minister whose ministry is the Tenderloin and downtown. He passes out tracts with the lordrsquo;s message, but there are times when he too, ducks and dodges the children of God to maintain his sanity. My uncle employs high tech means in his strategy: The cell phone. When he finds himself wanting to get out of a chit chat resulting from a chance meeting on the street, hersquo;ll pretend to receive a phone call. It goes like this: Uncle Ant: Hold on blood I got a phone callhellip;.hello? What! You span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="lyin’" data-scaytid="3"lyinrsquo;/span! What hospital you in? When that happen? Oh man! Look, Irsquo;m in the area. Irsquo;ll shoot on over there. Uncle Ant then apologizes for not being able to stay and partake in the chit chat. He walks two blocks to his imaginary friendmdash;passing out more tracts in the processmdash;before ending up at McDonalds or the Louisiana Fried Chicken/donut shop with the pretty Thai girl working the counter. /p pI found myself confronted with a duck and dodge situation recently. I was on Facebook, pretending to be a genius, posting quotes by famous men (and women) Irsquo;d never heard of. As I typed I heard the distinct blip sounds of Facebookrsquo;s instant message systemmdash;a system that allows people to know if yoursquo;re online and to send you instantaneous messages--basically Facebook#39;s version of a span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="chatline" data-scaytid="5"chatline/span. I recognized the person sending the message but I wasnrsquo;t in the mood to ldquo;get into his shit...onlinerdquo;. I was in a quandarymdash;what was I to do, ignore his message or respond, although I didnrsquo;t want to? I came up with a schememdash;I didnrsquo;t respond. I walked to the bathroom and took a seatmdash;not out of any bodily need but from a need to bide time and quell my guilt hoping that the wait would prompt my Facebook friend to throw in the towel on me. I sat for quite some time on that seat thinking that sometimes you just donrsquo;t want to get into anybodyrsquo;s shit but your own./p

p My thoughts: I thought that the general strike was impressive because there was thousands and thousands of people out there saying ldquo; We are the 99 percentrdquo;.nbsp; What the 99 percent is are all the workers in the world who get paid low-wage on jobs.nbsp; The 1 percent is all the bank corruption and the bankers from Wall Street./p p nbsp;/p p In the general strike, we marched all the way to the bridge then we stopped.nbsp; We stopped because there were a lot of youth scholars and mamas and we did not want to get lost on that bridge.nbsp;nbsp; We stayed there a little bit then we danced with Loco span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Bloco" data-scaytid="1"Bloco/span but the kids thought it was funny how the adults danced.nbsp; Speaking of dancing, on the way back, the kids were dancing!nbsp; The adults wersquo;re really laughing./p p nbsp;/p p When we were in the middle of the trip we ran into span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Mcdee’s" data-scaytid="3"Mcdeersquo;s/span and we ate.nbsp; We saw the bridge and it was crowded with protestors like a herd of rhinos whilenbsp;wenbsp;were driving out of Oakland, CA.nbsp; We went to the place many times, mostly for the organization ldquo;Occupy Oaklandrdquo;.nbsp;/p p nbsp;/p p nbsp;/p p strongThe first Time I went to Occupy Oakland/strong/p p nbsp;/p p It was a really hot day so we decided to go to a food place to get a cold drink.nbsp; Then we went to the big round meeting place near the end of the park.nbsp; They were plotting a next march that I did not hear because I got really hungry and ate some more food.nbsp; When I came back, my mom said we were leaving and I said ldquo;Finallyrdquo;, but did not know that we were going on a march with them.nbsp; So I just went.nbsp; So we walked all the say to city hall, stopped there, then they talked a little bit then the march was on.nbsp; We mad a right at city hall then we went to this coffee shop (I donrsquo;t know why).nbsp; We crossed the street and went down a block or two, then we went back.nbsp; It was pretty fun because my Uncle span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Muteado" data-scaytid="7"Muteado/span played sword fight and I won.nbsp; strongTo be continuedhellip;/strong/p p nbsp;/p p nbsp;/p p strongspan class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Decolonize" data-scaytid="11"Decolonize/span Oakland ishellip;/strong/p p nbsp;/p p Continued:nbsp; span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Muteado" data-scaytid="9"Muteado/span congratulated me that I won.nbsp; After a few hours of planning on who knows what, we left for real.nbsp; While we were in the car there was someone talking. h3 style="text-align: center;" An International Media Release/h3 h3 A childrsquo;s remains and other human bones have been identified at Canadarsquo;s oldest Indian residential school in Brantford, Ontario:/h3 h3 br / A Statement from the span data-scayt_word="Kanien’keha’" data-scaytid="1"Kanienrsquo;keharsquo;/span:span data-scayt_word="ka" data-scaytid="2"ka/span (Mohawk) Nation of the Grand River/h3 p Archeological surveys and test digs authorized by we, elders of thenbsp;span data-scayt_word="Kanien’keha" data-scaytid="4"Kanienrsquo;keha/span:span data-scayt_word="ka" data-scaytid="3"ka/spannbsp;Nation, have been conducted at the former Mohawk Institute Indian residential school since October 1./p p This past week, while on the grounds of the school, our researchers along with Kevin span data-scayt_word="Annett" data-scaytid="5"Annett/span span data-scayt_word="-Rawennatshani" data-scaytid="6"-Rawennatshani/span, who acts with our approval, have unearthed what has been described as human remains. nbsp; One bone among sixteen uncovered has been identified, through preliminary visual examination by a competent archeologist, as that of a young child. This bone sample is described by the same archeologist as ldquo;definitely humanrdquo;./p p A test dig in a twenty square foot area on grounds adjoining the former Mohawk Institute have revealed a considerable number of bones, as well as buttons which have been confirmed to be part of the childrenrsquo;s school uniforms. Large deposits of coal were also found associated with these remains, all at a depth of barely two feet. Several of the bones have also been cut up, suggesting that the bodies may have been deliberately dismembered, while other bones were broken./p p We declare the area on and near the former Mohawk Institute to be a crime site under our jurisdiction, and we will not allow representatives of the Crown or Church of England, or the government of Canada, access to these excavations because of their complicity in this crime./p p These institutions have consistently refused to disclose the evidence they possess regarding the Mohawk Institute and the deaths of children under their legal care, and therefore, we are proceeding to charge these bodies with crimes against humanity in international courts of justice, based in part on the forensic evidence we have uncovered./p p We now call upon our community and the world to rally behind our efforts to bring recognition to the remains of children buried on the Mohawk Institute grounds, and our work to excavate this site. Prior to any possible repatriation of these remains, and because these remains may include children from other indigenous nations, we look to those nations to participate with us in this work and welcome their input, and we urge them to begin their own excavations at local Indian residential schools./p p We appeal to other nations to send span data-scayt_word="archaeological" data-scaytid="7"archaeological/span and forensic specialists and international observers and peacekeepers to our territory to operate under our Mohawk jurisdiction, to assist with our inquiry and protect the burial sites until the remains can be accorded a proper burial according to our diverse traditions. Until these experts arrive to conduct a professional archeological excavation of these graves, we are temporarily suspending our excavations./p p As our investigation continues, the bone samples will be subjected to further forensic tests, and this data about the human remains uncovered at the Mohawk Institute will be prepared in a final report to be delivered in the spring of 2012 to human rights courts and Parliamentarians in Europe, as part of a campaign to bring charges of genocide against the Crown of England, the government of Canada, the Anglican Church in Canada and other guilty parties./p p The Mohawk Institute inquiry is held under the auspices of the span data-scayt_word="Onkwehon" data-scaytid="9"Onkwehon/span:we (Mohawk) Nation and Kevin span data-scayt_word="Annett" data-scaytid="8"Annett/span (span data-scayt_word="Rawennatshani" data-scaytid="11"Rawennatshani/span) of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State, who has our full authority and protection./p

/spanMrs. Bowie (pronounced span data-scayt_word="Boowy" data-scaytid="9"Boowy/span) is a homeless woman and one of the original residents of Occupy San Francisco where tonight she had been attacked.spannbsp; /spanIn my capacity as a local housing justice advocate and police accountability community worker, I have taken to visiting the encampment at Justinspannbsp; /spanHerman Plaza to observe the conditions of life there and more specifically keep tabs on the interactions that the Occupiers have with various enforcement agencies.spannbsp; /spanOn the evening in question (October 27, 2011) I arrived to the South end of the camp with an activist videographer around span data-scayt_word="9pm" data-scaytid="10"9pm/span after leaving the span data-scayt_word="Bayview" data-scaytid="11"Bayview/span Hunterrsquo;s Point Violence Prevention Summit.spannbsp; /spanBy and large the scene was calm with various small groups of Occupiers scattered conversing, eating, smoking, in short occupying.spannbsp; /spanNo one out of the roughly ninety people present (99% young and white) seemed to notice what to me was an obvious discrepancy from the rather placid scene, that of Mrs. Bowie sobbing amidst her completely broken down tent and disarrayed personal belongings.spannbsp; /spanAlarmed I approached her and inquired as to what happened.spannbsp; /spanHer story was shocking./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; /spanAfter a few moments of speaking with Mrs. Bowie she was able to calm down just enough to give account of what had happened.spannbsp; /spanBy her admission she had been attacked by a white supremacist faction of Occupiers, and then subsequently attacked by the police.spannbsp; /spanDuring the course of the original altercation her tent had been torn down, feces had been thrown on it, racial epithets (nigger nigger nigger etc.) had been bandied about, and she had been thrown to the cement.spannbsp; /spanAt some point the police entered the struggle and subsequently had a physical interaction with Mrs. Bowie as well.spannbsp; /spanThe particular officers involved were reported to be in squad car #43 and were driving away just as Mrs. Bowie was relaying this part of the story.spannbsp; /spanAstonishingly there was not one arrest.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Itrsquo;s the Chinatown Effect, rdquo;spannbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie lamented.spannbsp; /spanldquo;They let you fight, and then they take the last man span data-scayt_word="standing.”" data-scaytid="14"standing.rdquo;/spanspannbsp; /spanOur conversation was interrupted multiple times as people would curiously walk by us and Mrs. Bowie would panic, raising her cane saying ldquo;Thatrsquo;s one!spannbsp; /spanGet the fuck away from me!rdquo;spannbsp; /spanIt became obvious to me early in the conversation that Mrs. Bowie was suffering severe PTSD from the attacks, and that this was giving her difficulty in correctly identifying her assailants.spannbsp; /spanDespite her terror and disgust though, Mrs. Bowie was cogent and coherent and after speaking to a couple of occupiers that she indicated were involved I was able to corroborate most of her story and piece together a timeline.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Shersquo;s crazyhellip;she started yelling about the Klan and swinging her cane around, rdquo;spannbsp; /spansaid one white occupier.spannbsp; /spanAnother occupier, this one Black, chimed in with a less pejorative tone, ldquo;Yeah man, I think she has mental health span data-scayt_word="issues.”" data-scaytid="15"issues.rdquo;/spanspannbsp;nbsp; /spanI was not dissuaded by these caveats and I proceeded to ask if there was anyone at camp with experience addressing mental health needs.spannbsp; /spanThey shrugged.spannbsp; /spanTheir nonchalance was maddening.spannbsp; /spanI asked if there had been white power issues at the camp and was met by a reluctance to broach the topic that was echoed by the next half dozen people I would speak to.spannbsp; /spanEvery occupier I spoke to got quiet on this point but a few made silent or cryptic affirmations that this phenomenon was occurring and the apprehensive look in the eyes of every single one I spoke to betrayed the truth of the allegations.spannbsp; /spanAt this point in my investigation the first person who accused Mrs. Bowie of being crazy inquired as to whether I was a journalist.spannbsp; /spanI told him that a journalist was one of my hats but that I had originally come down to check the scene with the police.spannbsp; /spanHe became more cautiousspannbsp; /spanwith me, but not before giving me an amazing show.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Well I did have this maskhellip;rdquo;spannbsp; /spanhe said as he donned a self-styled hood.spannbsp; /spanThis roughly 6rsquo; man with ruddy white skin and dirty blond Viking locks pulled a triangular black cloth mask down over his face that looked virtually identical to a Klan mask outside of being the wrong color./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;" Further interviews conducted by myself and the videographer who I introduced to Mrs. Bowie established that the following scenario occurred.spannbsp; /spanThe man with the black Klan mask had approached Mrs. Bowie scaring her half to death.spannbsp; /spanShe responded in self-defense by swinging her cane around.spannbsp; /spanOthers at this point, who had been tormenting Mrs. Bowie for over a month, walking over her artwork and allowing their dogs to piss and shit on her camp while hurling slurs, jumped in to defend their lsquo;Brotherrsquo;.spannbsp; /spanldquo;The lead onehellip;I took my cane and hit him in the ass and balls, rdquo; Mrs. Bowie defiantly proclaimed.spannbsp; /spanIn the course of the commotion the police had been called over, and they took the stereotypical approach of automatically assuming the premise of lsquo;Crazy Black Womanrsquo;. They physically restrained her but seemed to be smugly satisfied that when the crowd dispersed they had done their job, and that there was nothing wrong with having the only Black Elder Woman that I saw (one of only about five Black people, and about ten people of color in the entire camp) injured, her home destroyed, and left shaking and sobbing, a victim of multiple hate crimes in what has been publicly touted as one of the most progressive movements in decades.spannbsp; /spanldquo;They did this to us in 1959,rdquo;spannbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie said with a look of heartbreaking disappointment./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;" The particular individuals engaged in the hate crimes have not been positively span data-scayt_word="ID’d" data-scaytid="17"IDrsquo;d/span.spannbsp;nbsp; /spanThe span data-scayt_word="kkkorporate" data-scaytid="18"kkkorporate/span media ldquo;didnrsquo;t see anythingrdquo;.spannbsp;nbsp;nbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie claimed that there were nine men and three women.spannbsp; /spanFurther investigation, that takes into consideration other peoplersquo;s accountsspannbsp; /spanand the fact that the traumatic nature of Mrs. Bowiersquo;s treatment may have engendered inaccurate associations based on fear, place the number more around four or five hard core abusive white supremacists.spannbsp; /spanThese particular people are alleged to have left the camp at this point in time.spannbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie has six friends that look out for her at camp who have been listed as: Fly, Stephanie, Aaron, Wolf, Huey, and Trent.spannbsp; /spanOf the six, at least one had never even given Mrs. Bowie thought until the videographer introduced the two and reported the attack./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" There are those who advised me not to report on this.spannbsp; /spanI was told that I would be attacking a still nascent movement.spannbsp; /spanI would be sowing the seeds of dissent.spannbsp; /spanI feel that I have an obligation to do so.spannbsp; /spanMythology has got to be combated on these grounds.spannbsp; /spanJust as it is a myth that Oprah will be able to solve the problems of all Black folk, it is a myth that Black Women who have been abused are lsquo;Crazyrsquo;.spannbsp; /spanIt is a myth that police are here to ensure lsquo;Safetyrsquo;.spannbsp; /spanIt is a myth that you are not racist if you are not one of the minority that acts out its position with overt violence.spannbsp; /spanIt is a myth that there is a 99% homogeneous group of people if there is a failure to acknowledge that racism is at the bedrock of US capitalism and has created violent schisms and utterly different living conditions for various groups of people during the course of over half a millennium.spannbsp; /spanMore optimistically it is a myth that nothing can be done to combat this.spannbsp; /spanThis is not a hit piece on Occupy SF.spannbsp; /spanThis is ABSOLUTELY not a call for State Intervention.spannbsp; /spanIt is a call to People of Color and Black folk in particular to enter the fray.spannbsp; /spanIn the grand tradition of giants like Ella Baker or Ida span data-scayt_word="B.Wells" data-scaytid="19"B.Wells/span, Mrs. Bowie is a beacon showing us directions for a better future.spannbsp; /spanIt is incumbent upon us to engage in numbers and coordinate with the current Occupiers, perhaps through a span data-scayt_word="POC" data-scaytid="20"POC/span caucus/working group, Occupy the Hood, spannbsp; /spanor some such vehicle to insure that she does not have to struggle alone, to ensure the safety and well being of our people, and to insure that a newly pre-figured world does not re-create the slave chains of the old one.spannbsp; /spanTwo more myths to debunk:spannbsp; /span1.spannbsp; /spanWHITE PEOPLE CANNOT DO THIS WITHOUT US!spannbsp; /span2.spannbsp; /spanIF RACISM IS NOT CONFRONTED AND ADDRESSED WITH A COURAGE THAT FORCES US INTOspannbsp; /spanA PLACE OF INTERGENERATIONAL EXISTENTIAL PAIN WITH AN EYE TOWARDS MENTAL/SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND A SHOULDER TO THE PHYSICAL LIBERATION OF OUR PEOPLE, THERE IS NO CONSENSUS!/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" OCCUPY TOGETHER!spannbsp; /spanOCCUPY EVERYTHING!spannbsp; /spanEND HATE CRIMES!spannbsp; /spanFREE THE LAND!spannbsp; /spanALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE!/p

I had explained to the bank manager that there was no way I could pay that overdrawn fee and that in fact if it was charged to my account it would drain the last few dollars in my meager account that I was going to use for food and result in entering my name in the span data-scayt_word="“cheksystems”" data-scaytid="3"ldquo;cheksystemsrdquo;/span data base, which meant I could never open a checking account anywhere else. From that day on I became sickly dependent on Bank of America, as one becomes reliant on a drug dealer or a partner that abuses you, puts you down and steals your money and yet you come back for more, only to enmesh yourself further in the process of loss, abuse and dependency./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" My sick relationship with span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="4"BofA/span began when I was on welfare a few years prior, because span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="5"BofA/span held the City contract with welfare so they ldquo;allowedrdquo; me to open a ldquo;savings onlyrdquo; account. I reflected on this whole sad part of my span data-scayt_word="herstory" data-scaytid="6"herstory/span when I heard about the Peoplersquo;s Reserve Credit Union being launched at span data-scayt_word="OccupySF" data-scaytid="7"OccupySF/span last week./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" I finally got a job and was able to get my mama and my son out of my deep poverty and span data-scayt_word="houselessness" data-scaytid="8"houselessness/span. The first pay-check I received I attempted to open a new account in a smaller ldquo;community bankrdquo; assuming my new employed status would be my access pass out of the chains of my criminalized past, ldquo;Irsquo;m sorry Ms. Garcia, we cant open an account for you, your name comes up on span data-scayt_word="Chek-systems”" data-scaytid="9"Chek-systemsrdquo;/span . It was the same thing at three more banks I tried./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Fast span data-scayt_word="foreward" data-scaytid="12"foreward/span to last year when I tried again. This time I marched into three credit unions with my unemployment check, determined, albeit quixotically, to ldquo;take my money and POOR Magazinersquo;s meager money out of the blood-stained walls of span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="10"BofA/span. ldquo;Sorry, Ms Garcia, but we cant open an account for you, your name comes up in span data-scayt_word="chek-systems”" data-scaytid="15"chek-systemsrdquo;/span This time I was even more devastated by the impossibility of the situation. I was an advocate, an organizer and most of all a revolutionary who wanted nothing to do with the killing systems of corporate money-handlers, and as the co-editor of a poor peoples-led organization (POOR Magazine) who worked everyday to fight poverty and racism and displacement, in many times perpetrated by corporations like span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="11"BofA/span and Wells Fargo, why were we eternally shackled by the corporate bank-pimp?/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Sadly, what I came to realize is that what I and most of my fellow poverty, disability, migrant and indigenous scholars at POOR are before we are revolutionaries are span data-scayt_word="po’" data-scaytid="16"porsquo;/span. Shackled, stuck and supporting multiple racist and span data-scayt_word="classist" data-scaytid="17"classist/span systems that end up being the very ones that kill us./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" In fact in the scarcity model reality in which we fight to stay alive in, having a span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="18"BofA/span or Wells Fargo account is preferable to the other huge majority of us poverty and span data-scayt_word="im" data-scaytid="22"im/spanspan data-scayt_word="/migrante" data-scaytid="62"/span data-scayt_word="migrante" data-scaytid="23"migrante/span/span scholars who are forced to use corner liquor stores and check-cashing places that take huge fees out of our meager salaries and paychecks. Check-cashing places. I might add that are backed or owned by span data-scayt_word="Citi-bank" data-scaytid="24"Citi-bank/span, span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="19"BofA/span and/or Wells Fargo./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" The enormity of this issue was brought up again when Occupy Oakland, Occupy SF and Occupy the Hood protested the predatory lending of all the banks in the foreclosure scandal as well as the support by several banks of the detention centers of span data-scayt_word="migrante" data-scaytid="25"migrante/span peoples specifically Wells Fargo.span style=""nbsp; /spanThe massive actions by ldquo;Occupy span data-scayt_word="Folx" data-scaytid="27"Folx/span, in tandem with the infamous ldquo;Bank Transfer Day, were proceeded by a hearing held by John span data-scayt_word="Avalos" data-scaytid="28"Avalos/span and other conscious SF board supervisors in the board of supervisors about San Francisco launching a community bank./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Fueled with all of the energy of bank-transfer day one of our family members, Toby, and I launched into yet another attempt to break the chains of span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="29"BofA/span on POOR Magazinersquo;s neck by contacting Phil Tings office who supposedly had launched span data-scayt_word="BankonSF" data-scaytid="31"BankonSF/span to address these very inequities./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Several phone trees and Phil Ting office personnel later, Toby looked at me and said, ldquo;no luck.rdquo; The only banks that are being referred also use span data-scayt_word="chek-systems" data-scaytid="32"chek-systems/span and/or donrsquo;t have the capability to run commercial accounts which we need for POOR Magazine. Upon hearing yet another reminder that we are owned by this brutal pimp I felt truly defeated./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Ultimately, these kinds of shackles can only be broken by moving entirely off the blood-stained span data-scayt_word="amerikkkan" data-scaytid="33"amerikkkan/span dollars, reclaiming long ago indigenous stolen land and resources so we can grow our own food, build our own homes, teach our children and make and share resources in a really real community model like POOR Magazine is attempting to accomplish with a href="http://www.poormagazine.org/homefulness"span data-scayt_word="HOMEFULNESS" data-scaytid="34"HOMEFULNESS/span/a/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" In the meantime I am nervously excited about the possibility of the kind of truly community based peoples bank that span data-scayt_word="OccupySF" data-scaytid="35"OccupySF/span proposed last week. But, I wonder, will it really be accessible to poor peoples and span data-scayt_word="im" data-scaytid="36"im/span/migrant peoples who are excluded from most banks and credit unions that already exist. And do organizers understand that a really real ldquo;Peoples Credit Unionrdquo; would not only think through who was supporting it but think through the ldquo;qualificationsrdquo; required for being apart of it, such as notspan style=""nbsp; /spanrequiring a drivers license or California ID as one of their forms ofspan style=""nbsp; /spanrequired IDrsquo;s , not contracting with databases that ldquo;screenrdquo; out poor people, and that they wouldnrsquo;tspan style=""nbsp; /spanrequire a ridiculously high ldquo;minimumrdquo; deposit to open an account. And that the Credit Unionrsquo;s ldquo;insurancerdquo; wouldnrsquo;t be held by yet another shadow bank span data-scayt_word="affilitate" data-scaytid="39"affilitate/span of span data-scayt_word="Bof" data-scaytid="40"Bof/span A or Wells Fargo, Chase or IMF like the poor Bank of span data-scayt_word="Grameen" data-scaytid="41"Grameen/span in Bangladesh, a poor peoples collective banking circle, which eventually ended up getting pimped by the International Monetary Fund(IMF).. Maybe if a really real peoples bank was launched, we span data-scayt_word="po" data-scaytid="42"po/span folk could finally de-occupy ourselves with these killing bank-pimps forever.. maybe./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;nbsp; /span/p
