/spanMrs. Bowie (pronounced span data-scayt_word="Boowy" data-scaytid="9"Boowy/span) is a homeless woman and one of the original residents of Occupy San Francisco where tonight she had been attacked.spannbsp; /spanIn my capacity as a local housing justice advocate and police accountability community worker, I have taken to visiting the encampment at Justinspannbsp; /spanHerman Plaza to observe the conditions of life there and more specifically keep tabs on the interactions that the Occupiers have with various enforcement agencies.spannbsp; /spanOn the evening in question (October 27, 2011) I arrived to the South end of the camp with an activist videographer around span data-scayt_word="9pm" data-scaytid="10"9pm/span after leaving the span data-scayt_word="Bayview" data-scaytid="11"Bayview/span Hunterrsquo;s Point Violence Prevention Summit.spannbsp; /spanUpon arrival the videographer and I observed two police cars parked in the south lot adjacent to the camp.spannbsp; /spanChannel 7 news had a van in the same lotspannbsp; /spanparked a little to the east of the cops and was setting up for a broadcast.spannbsp; /spanBy and large the scene was calm with various small groups of Occupiers scattered conversing, eating, smoking, in short occupying.spannbsp; /spanNo one out of the roughly ninety people present (99% young and white) seemed to notice what to me was an obvious discrepancy from the rather placid scene, that of Mrs. Bowie sobbing amidst her completely broken down tent and disarrayed personal belongings.spannbsp; /spanAlarmed I approached her and inquired as to what happened.spannbsp; /spanHer story was shocking./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; /spanldquo;My head hit the cement right span data-scayt_word="there.”" data-scaytid="12"there.rdquo;/span spannbsp;/spanMrs. Bowie said pointing out a spot just east of the wreckage that was moments earlier her home.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Theyrsquo;re all the samehellip;the Klanhellip;the policehellip; The police span data-scayt_word="gonna" data-scaytid="16"gonna/span beat me span data-scayt_word="anyway.”" data-scaytid="13"anyway.rdquo;/spanspannbsp; /spanAfter a few moments of speaking with Mrs. Bowie she was able to calm down just enough to give account of what had happened.spannbsp; /spanBy her admission she had been attacked by a white supremacist faction of Occupiers, and then subsequently attacked by the police.spannbsp; /spanDuring the course of the original altercation her tent had been torn down, feces had been thrown on it, racial epithets (nigger nigger nigger etc.) had been bandied about, and she had been thrown to the cement.spannbsp; /spanAt some point the police entered the struggle and subsequently had a physical interaction with Mrs. Bowie as well.spannbsp; /spanThe particular officers involved were reported to be in squad car #43 and were driving away just as Mrs. Bowie was relaying this part of the story.spannbsp; /spanAstonishingly there was not one arrest.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Itrsquo;s the Chinatown Effect, rdquo;spannbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie lamented.spannbsp; /spanldquo;They let you fight, and then they take the last man span data-scayt_word="standing.”" data-scaytid="14"standing.rdquo;/spanspannbsp; /spanOur conversation was interrupted multiple times as people would curiously walk by us and Mrs. Bowie would panic, raising her cane saying ldquo;Thatrsquo;s one!spannbsp; /spanGet the fuck away from me!rdquo;spannbsp; /spanIt became obvious to me early in the conversation that Mrs. Bowie was suffering severe PTSD from the attacks, and that this was giving her difficulty in correctly identifying her assailants.spannbsp; /spanDespite her terror and disgust though, Mrs. Bowie was cogent and coherent and after speaking to a couple of occupiers that she indicated were involved I was able to corroborate most of her story and piece together a timeline.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Shersquo;s crazyhellip;she started yelling about the Klan and swinging her cane around, rdquo;spannbsp; /spansaid one white occupier.spannbsp; /spanAnother occupier, this one Black, chimed in with a less pejorative tone, ldquo;Yeah man, I think she has mental health span data-scayt_word="issues.”" data-scaytid="15"issues.rdquo;/spanspannbsp;nbsp; /spanI was not dissuaded by these caveats and I proceeded to ask if there was anyone at camp with experience addressing mental health needs.spannbsp; /spanThey shrugged.spannbsp; /spanTheir nonchalance was maddening.spannbsp; /spanI asked if there had been white power issues at the camp and was met by a reluctance to broach the topic that was echoed by the next half dozen people I would speak to.spannbsp; /spanEvery occupier I spoke to got quiet on this point but a few made silent or cryptic affirmations that this phenomenon was occurring and the apprehensive look in the eyes of every single one I spoke to betrayed the truth of the allegations.spannbsp; /spanAt this point in my investigation the first person who accused Mrs. Bowie of being crazy inquired as to whether I was a journalist.spannbsp; /spanI told him that a journalist was one of my hats but that I had originally come down to check the scene with the police.spannbsp; /spanHe became more cautiousspannbsp; /spanwith me, but not before giving me an amazing show.spannbsp; /spanldquo;Well I did have this maskhellip;rdquo;spannbsp; /spanhe said as he donned a self-styled hood.spannbsp; /spanThis roughly 6rsquo; man with ruddy white skin and dirty blond Viking locks pulled a triangular black cloth mask down over his face that looked virtually identical to a Klan mask outside of being the wrong color./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;" Further interviews conducted by myself and the videographer who I introduced to Mrs. Bowie established that the following scenario occurred.spannbsp; /spanThe man with the black Klan mask had approached Mrs. Bowie scaring her half to death.spannbsp; /spanShe responded in self-defense by swinging her cane around.spannbsp; /spanOthers at this point, who had been tormenting Mrs. Bowie for over a month, walking over her artwork and allowing their dogs to piss and shit on her camp while hurling slurs, jumped in to defend their lsquo;Brotherrsquo;.spannbsp; /spanldquo;The lead onehellip;I took my cane and hit him in the ass and balls, rdquo; Mrs. Bowie defiantly proclaimed.spannbsp; /spanIn the course of the commotion the police had been called over, and they took the stereotypical approach of automatically assuming the premise of lsquo;Crazy Black Womanrsquo;. They physically restrained her but seemed to be smugly satisfied that when the crowd dispersed they had done their job, and that there was nothing wrong with having the only Black Elder Woman that I saw (one of only about five Black people, and about ten people of color in the entire camp) injured, her home destroyed, and left shaking and sobbing, a victim of multiple hate crimes in what has been publicly touted as one of the most progressive movements in decades.spannbsp; /spanldquo;They did this to us in 1959,rdquo;spannbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie said with a look of heartbreaking disappointment./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;" The particular individuals engaged in the hate crimes have not been positively span data-scayt_word="ID’d" data-scaytid="17"IDrsquo;d/span.spannbsp;nbsp; /spanThe span data-scayt_word="kkkorporate" data-scaytid="18"kkkorporate/span media ldquo;didnrsquo;t see anythingrdquo;.spannbsp;nbsp;nbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie claimed that there were nine men and three women.spannbsp; /spanFurther investigation, that takes into consideration other peoplersquo;s accountsspannbsp; /spanand the fact that the traumatic nature of Mrs. Bowiersquo;s treatment may have engendered inaccurate associations based on fear, place the number more around four or five hard core abusive white supremacists.spannbsp; /spanThese particular people are alleged to have left the camp at this point in time.spannbsp; /spanMrs. Bowie has six friends that look out for her at camp who have been listed as: Fly, Stephanie, Aaron, Wolf, Huey, and Trent.spannbsp; /spanOf the six, at least one had never even given Mrs. Bowie thought until the videographer introduced the two and reported the attack./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" spannbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" There are those who advised me not to report on this.spannbsp; /spanI was told that I would be attacking a still nascent movement.spannbsp; /spanI would be sowing the seeds of dissent.spannbsp; /spanI feel that I have an obligation to do so.spannbsp; /spanMythology has got to be combated on these grounds.spannbsp; /spanJust as it is a myth that Oprah will be able to solve the problems of all Black folk, it is a myth that Black Women who have been abused are lsquo;Crazyrsquo;.spannbsp; /spanIt is a myth that police are here to ensure lsquo;Safetyrsquo;.spannbsp; /spanIt is a myth that you are not racist if you are not one of the minority that acts out its position with overt violence.spannbsp; /spanIt is a myth that there is a 99% homogeneous group of people if there is a failure to acknowledge that racism is at the bedrock of US capitalism and has created violent schisms and utterly different living conditions for various groups of people during the course of over half a millennium.spannbsp; /spanMore optimistically it is a myth that nothing can be done to combat this.spannbsp; /spanThis is not a hit piece on Occupy SF.spannbsp; /spanThis is ABSOLUTELY not a call for State Intervention.spannbsp; /spanIt is a call to People of Color and Black folk in particular to enter the fray.spannbsp; /spanIn the grand tradition of giants like Ella Baker or Ida span data-scayt_word="B.Wells" data-scaytid="19"B.Wells/span, Mrs. Bowie is a beacon showing us directions for a better future.spannbsp; /spanIt is incumbent upon us to engage in numbers and coordinate with the current Occupiers, perhaps through a span data-scayt_word="POC" data-scaytid="20"POC/span caucus/working group, Occupy the Hood, spannbsp; /spanor some such vehicle to insure that she does not have to struggle alone, to ensure the safety and well being of our people, and to insure that a newly pre-figured world does not re-create the slave chains of the old one.spannbsp; /spanTwo more myths to debunk:spannbsp; /span1.spannbsp; /spanWHITE PEOPLE CANNOT DO THIS WITHOUT US!spannbsp; /span2.spannbsp; /spanIF RACISM IS NOT CONFRONTED AND ADDRESSED WITH A COURAGE THAT FORCES US INTOspannbsp; /spanA PLACE OF INTERGENERATIONAL EXISTENTIAL PAIN WITH AN EYE TOWARDS MENTAL/SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND A SHOULDER TO THE PHYSICAL LIBERATION OF OUR PEOPLE, THERE IS NO CONSENSUS!/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" OCCUPY TOGETHER!spannbsp; /spanOCCUPY EVERYTHING!spannbsp; /spanEND HATE CRIMES!spannbsp; /spanFREE THE LAND!spannbsp; /spanALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE!/p

p strongOccupied By span data-scayt_word="BankofAmerikkka" data-scaytid="81"BankofAmerikkka/span- Why thousands of poor peoples/migrant workers were left out of Bank Transfer Day/strong/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" ldquo;Irsquo;m sorry there is nothing we can do,rdquo; the words sailed through the Bank of America lobby as though part of a stop motion scene in a horror movie. I stood there, mouth agape. My shaking hands clutching my 5 month old sonrsquo;s stroller. Could it be? Could the oh so kind woman of color bank manager who had always said hi to me and my disabled mama, have just refused my desperate plea to reverse a $35.00 over-drawn charge after I explained to her that it would result in my baby not eating span data-scayt_word="tonite" data-scaytid="1"tonite/span?/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" This was less than six years ago when I was span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="2"houseless/span with my mama and my son. I had explained to the bank manager that there was no way I could pay that overdrawn fee and that in fact if it was charged to my account it would drain the last few dollars in my meager account that I was going to use for food and result in entering my name in the span data-scayt_word="“cheksystems”" data-scaytid="3"ldquo;cheksystemsrdquo;/span data base, which meant I could never open a checking account anywhere else. From that day on I became sickly dependent on Bank of America, as one becomes reliant on a drug dealer or a partner that abuses you, puts you down and steals your money and yet you come back for more, only to enmesh yourself further in the process of loss, abuse and dependency./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" My sick relationship with span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="4"BofA/span began when I was on welfare a few years prior, because span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="5"BofA/span held the City contract with welfare so they ldquo;allowedrdquo; me to open a ldquo;savings onlyrdquo; account. I reflected on this whole sad part of my span data-scayt_word="herstory" data-scaytid="6"herstory/span when I heard about the Peoplersquo;s Reserve Credit Union being launched at span data-scayt_word="OccupySF" data-scaytid="7"OccupySF/span last week./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" I finally got a job and was able to get my mama and my son out of my deep poverty and span data-scayt_word="houselessness" data-scaytid="8"houselessness/span. The first pay-check I received I attempted to open a new account in a smaller ldquo;community bankrdquo; assuming my new employed status would be my access pass out of the chains of my criminalized past, ldquo;Irsquo;m sorry Ms. Garcia, we cant open an account for you, your name comes up on span data-scayt_word="Chek-systems”" data-scaytid="9"Chek-systemsrdquo;/span . It was the same thing at three more banks I tried./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Fast span data-scayt_word="foreward" data-scaytid="12"foreward/span to last year when I tried again. This time I marched into three credit unions with my unemployment check, determined, albeit quixotically, to ldquo;take my money and POOR Magazinersquo;s meager money out of the blood-stained walls of span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="10"BofA/span. ldquo;Sorry, Ms Garcia, but we cant open an account for you, your name comes up in span data-scayt_word="chek-systems”" data-scaytid="15"chek-systemsrdquo;/span This time I was even more devastated by the impossibility of the situation. I was an advocate, an organizer and most of all a revolutionary who wanted nothing to do with the killing systems of corporate money-handlers, and as the co-editor of a poor peoples-led organization (POOR Magazine) who worked everyday to fight poverty and racism and displacement, in many times perpetrated by corporations like span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="11"BofA/span and Wells Fargo, why were we eternally shackled by the corporate bank-pimp?/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Sadly, what I came to realize is that what I and most of my fellow poverty, disability, migrant and indigenous scholars at POOR are before we are revolutionaries are span data-scayt_word="po’" data-scaytid="16"porsquo;/span. Shackled, stuck and supporting multiple racist and span data-scayt_word="classist" data-scaytid="17"classist/span systems that end up being the very ones that kill us./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" In fact in the scarcity model reality in which we fight to stay alive in, having a span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="18"BofA/span or Wells Fargo account is preferable to the other huge majority of us poverty and span data-scayt_word="im" data-scaytid="22"im/spanspan data-scayt_word="/migrante" data-scaytid="62"/span data-scayt_word="migrante" data-scaytid="23"migrante/span/span scholars who are forced to use corner liquor stores and check-cashing places that take huge fees out of our meager salaries and paychecks. Check-cashing places. I might add that are backed or owned by span data-scayt_word="Citi-bank" data-scaytid="24"Citi-bank/span, span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="19"BofA/span and/or Wells Fargo./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" The enormity of this issue was brought up again when Occupy Oakland, Occupy SF and Occupy the Hood protested the predatory lending of all the banks in the foreclosure scandal as well as the support by several banks of the detention centers of span data-scayt_word="migrante" data-scaytid="25"migrante/span peoples specifically Wells Fargo.span style=""nbsp; /spanThe massive actions by ldquo;Occupy span data-scayt_word="Folx" data-scaytid="27"Folx/span, in tandem with the infamous ldquo;Bank Transfer Day, were proceeded by a hearing held by John span data-scayt_word="Avalos" data-scaytid="28"Avalos/span and other conscious SF board supervisors in the board of supervisors about San Francisco launching a community bank./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Fueled with all of the energy of bank-transfer day one of our family members, Toby, and I launched into yet another attempt to break the chains of span data-scayt_word="BofA" data-scaytid="29"BofA/span on POOR Magazinersquo;s neck by contacting Phil Tings office who supposedly had launched span data-scayt_word="BankonSF" data-scaytid="31"BankonSF/span to address these very inequities./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Several phone trees and Phil Ting office personnel later, Toby looked at me and said, ldquo;no luck.rdquo; The only banks that are being referred also use span data-scayt_word="chek-systems" data-scaytid="32"chek-systems/span and/or donrsquo;t have the capability to run commercial accounts which we need for POOR Magazine. Upon hearing yet another reminder that we are owned by this brutal pimp I felt truly defeated./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Ultimately, these kinds of shackles can only be broken by moving entirely off the blood-stained span data-scayt_word="amerikkkan" data-scaytid="33"amerikkkan/span dollars, reclaiming long ago indigenous stolen land and resources so we can grow our own food, build our own homes, teach our children and make and share resources in a really real community model like POOR Magazine is attempting to accomplish with a href="http://www.poormagazine.org/homefulness"span data-scayt_word="HOMEFULNESS" data-scaytid="34"HOMEFULNESS/span/a/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" In the meantime I am nervously excited about the possibility of the kind of truly community based peoples bank that span data-scayt_word="OccupySF" data-scaytid="35"OccupySF/span proposed last week. But, I wonder, will it really be accessible to poor peoples and span data-scayt_word="im" data-scaytid="36"im/span/migrant peoples who are excluded from most banks and credit unions that already exist. And do organizers understand that a really real ldquo;Peoples Credit Unionrdquo; would not only think through who was supporting it but think through the ldquo;qualificationsrdquo; required for being apart of it, such as notspan style=""nbsp; /spanrequiring a drivers license or California ID as one of their forms ofspan style=""nbsp; /spanrequired IDrsquo;s , not contracting with databases that ldquo;screenrdquo; out poor people, and that they wouldnrsquo;tspan style=""nbsp; /spanrequire a ridiculously high ldquo;minimumrdquo; deposit to open an account. And that the Credit Unionrsquo;s ldquo;insurancerdquo; wouldnrsquo;t be held by yet another shadow bank span data-scayt_word="affilitate" data-scaytid="39"affilitate/span of span data-scayt_word="Bof" data-scaytid="40"Bof/span A or Wells Fargo, Chase or IMF like the poor Bank of span data-scayt_word="Grameen" data-scaytid="41"Grameen/span in Bangladesh, a poor peoples collective banking circle, which eventually ended up getting pimped by the International Monetary Fund(IMF).. Maybe if a really real peoples bank was launched, we span data-scayt_word="po" data-scaytid="42"po/span folk could finally de-occupy ourselves with these killing bank-pimps forever.. maybe./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;nbsp; /span/p

pMichael Buckholtz – Autism, Music A Lot Moore/p p1) Krip-Hop Nation (KHN) - Most people have known that you worked with MC Hammer back in the day. Can you tell us your work back then compare to your music work today?/p pMichael Buckholtz: Thank you. Sure. The major difference is that I'm not actually writing for Hip- Hop artists much anymore. I mostly listened to jazz, rock, folk or some other popular music of the day when I was a kid, growing up in New Jersey. The music was diverse and I've come back to that. I didn't really work in Hip Hop until my good friend M.C. Hammer asked me to. Believe it or not, my diverse musical background prepped me perfectly for a career in music with Hammer. As of this moment, I'm working with an acoustic artist on APR music (Acoustic Pop Rock). I enjoy this style very much because it allows not only the artist to express himself or herself in the lyrical content, but, the music speaks to you, as well. The artist is Perrie Kitching at a href="http://www.PerrieKitching.com" title="www.PerrieKitching.com"www.PerrieKitching.com/a./p p2) KHN - Lately there has been all of this hoopla around autism everywhere from Hip-Hop charities to politicians. Tell us your experience and your non--profit in this field./p pMichael Buckholtz: My involvement, in what's turning out to be a mad “gold rush” to capitalize on all things autism, started quite organically. I learned, back in 1993, that I was possibly on the autism spectrum along with my siblings and father. It wasn't until my nephew was born (and developing to become another autistic member of the family) that I decided maybe to learn more about this condition I might have. I took the time to become officially evaluated and am, indeed, on the autism spectrum. That discovery about my nephew and me snow-balled into wanting to do something for the Autistic Community that was direct and impactful. The focus of the non-profit (Aid for Autistic Children Foundation, Inc.) was to be simple, but comprehensive: Forgive the debt for qualified families raising autistic children or autistic adults experiencing serious financial hardship due to the unique nature of the autistic condition./p pIn as much as my experience is concerned, I lived the financial devastation that can come with having an autistic perspective on life. I continue to recover, however, I understand the need for fiscal responsibility in the lives of these families and autistic individuals first hand. I developed a system very much based on the basic principles of universal finance and my own families recovery from bankruptcy and unintentional financial indiscretion, all due to the unpredictability involved in raising children who are autistic or just being an autistic individual./p p3) KHN - What do you think about Autism Speaks?/p pMichael Buckholtz: My diplomatic answer is this: What I think about Autism Speaks will not make any significant impact on the Autistic Communities direct immediate needs. Autism Speaks is doing exactly what it is designed to do./p p4) KHN - Musically what are you working on and do you every write songs about the issues facing people in poverty living with autism or other disabilities?/p pMichael Buckholtz: Currently, I've signed an acoustic singer/songwriter named Perrie Kitching to my production company, Sunlight International Mgmt, Inc. (S.I.M., Inc.) I produced four singles on him to date. We are heavily in the promotion stage of his first single, “I Fell” (Letter of Love). Anyone can see what he's up to on a href="http://www.PerrieKitching.com" title="www.PerrieKitching.com"www.PerrieKitching.com/a./p pI actually have songs I've written specifically about the feelings one may have as a parent or person dealing with autism or being autistic. That's my personal experience and it organically tends to make it's way into my songwriting. I enjoy writing songs that talk about how people feel. Whether one is able or disabled, anyone of us can feel overwhelmed by the pressures of the world. All of us can relate to that. Having a disability amplifies many already heavy societal pressures. Those experiences can translate emotionally to anyone. That's how any song should be written, in my view. I write to include everyone in that experience no matter who they are./p p5) KHN Tell us about your book, Autism Is My Universe: ...So How 'Bout We "Not" Call It A Disability!/p pMichael Buckholtz: It's a snapshot about different moments in my journey through life as a high- functioning autistic person and not really knowing I was. I simply wanted people to see my journey for what it is; a story about a quirky kid that grew into a quirky adult and still, somehow, made good on his promised goals to himself. I try not to sugar coat things, preach or prophesy. It's all about seeing how I made it, even though I didn't always have the facts. I was intellectually curious enough to keep moving forward and not dwell on what did not work in my life. Always seek to improve oneself no matter what your circumstance, especially if you are coping or accepting autism and being autistic. I'm also a very spiritually connected person. I hope that's the overarching message folks get from it./p p6) KHN - What is your viewpoint about the Black community and their awareness around disability?/p pMichael Buckholtz: Within the Brown community, there still isn't enough attention on, or, the promotion of developing the needed intellectual curiosity to research what steps to take in making ones situation better, whether it's helping with the disabled or coping with a disability. There is, also, a disparity in the Brown community concerning the perception of how disabling a disability should be if one is brown. This generational cycle of ignoring a true disability or attempting to 'pray it away', is, sadly, the majority of the problem. Awareness isn't something that needs to be targeted at any one particular group. Disabilities affect all socioeconomic levels and nations of peoples. Empathy plays a large roll in being actively aware, but, no government could effectively mandate empathy, much like China is attempting to do now, after a the world was disgusted by how passersby let a small child lay bleeding in an ally after being struck by two vehicles. We all need to, daily, make a conscious effort to be looking out for each other as people./p pAll too often, excessive energy and resources within the Brown community are being spent trying to create the next Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Lil' Wayne or Jay Z. There needs to be a focus on another crop of George Washington Carver's, Garrett Augustus Morgan's, Philip Emeagwali's and Valerie Thomas's. If readers don't know who these people are, that's the whole of our problem. There, also, needs to be a non-prejudicial acceptance and approach to educating the disabled from the time they arebr / small children to when they've grown into adulthood. Everyone has the ability to learn regardless of the pace of learning. Overall, I believe awareness within the Brown communities is improving./p p7) KHN- Do you think the music industry is ready for musicians with disabilities and how can we push the industry to do right?/p pMichael Buckholtz: No. I don't think it is. This music industrial complex is built on packaging what's perceived as beautiful, hip and cool. As long as this perception does not include persons with disabilities, no amount of pushing will create a corporate music empire with a conscience. However, if the brand of an individual recording artist gets to stratospheric proportions (like Lady GaGa), the impact of that artist promoting inclusion for the disenfranchised, disabled and the like would be much more substantial and sustained. An example is Sir Elton John and the AIDS fight. His internationally known brand, as a musician, brings much awareness, funding and action to the cause. The same needs to happen for the autistic community. That is my and Perrie Kitching's sincere intention. He WILL be the world's biggest music superstar (of his generation) to bring awareness, funding and action to autism and a few other charitable needs. The hard work to create this kind of a powerful brand for Perrie Kitching is going on as I do this interview./p p8) KHN - I read that you, your father and brother all had some form of autism. Tell us in your work today how your agency reach the Black families espespeciallyack (especially Black) fathers with sons with autism?/p pMichael Buckholtz: Yes, my siblings and father all rest somewhere on the autistic spectrum. We all cope differently. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to discovering what works for whom./p pAid for Autistic Children Foundation is a national 501c(3) non-profit that is currently reaching out over the Internet. We lack the volunteers and funding to reach out in more organic hands on way. We cater to all regardless of nationality or ethnicity. Many issues with lack of reach do, I agree, fall squarely on the back of the agency. That agency needs to appeal in some way to everyone (brown people included) so they feel connected or drawn to that organization. I simply started with myself and a story. I'm a brown person. It's hard for me to ignore that fact. I don't hide it. On the non-profit website, I even open with a video (sponsored in part by The Dan Marino Foundation) that openly discusses discrimination./p pMany father's in our Brown communities need tools. Some fathers simply need an adviser (or mentor) they can trust will confidentially listen to their concerns and hopes for their disabled child. Many just don't want the responsibility and there's very little any human being or agency can do to change a heart condition. Others simply just won't look for assistance due to pride, constant disappointment with other agencies or the perception that the United States system of societal inclusion does not include them, so, why even try (lack of trust). We understand this sort of thing exists and work hard to address these issues./p p9) KHN - How can people help with your organization and music endeavors?/p pMichael Buckholtz: Simple. We are national, but, relatively small in structure. We are building. On our website at a href="http://www.aacfinc.org" title="www.aacfinc.org"www.aacfinc.org/a, anyone can donate by pushing the donate button. That will take you to the donation page and give you a number of options for giving. A really cool method of support is to donate to get a lapel pin of our puzzle logo. It's the puzzle with a heart. Just add it to your cart. If you want to volunteer, the most one can do is collect funds for us, but, we are not yet structured to oversee those volunteers that wish to collect monies on behalf of Aid for Autistic Children Foundation. We are still growing and need funding to facilitate that. Help us build the foundation first, then we can fan out to do countrywide AACF, Inc. fund raising events, safely and legally monitored. We want all the funding to go to the families and autistic individuals.br / The music side of things will be easy. I just need to make or produce good music with an equally good recording artist. I'll give the public what they want and the rest should be history. I did it once before and I still got it in me to do again. Just visit my Facebook Musician/Band page (Michael Buckholtz), “Like” it and follow the journey. Folks should, also, visit a href="http://www.PerrieKitching.com" title="www.PerrieKitching.com"www.PerrieKitching.com/a and register as a fan to follow his journey with me. That site is the vehicle to take you wherever he goes in the industry. He's a young talented acoustic singer/songwriter that just wants to empower people to love and dream. I mostly want folks to love and dream about him. Haha!/p p10) KHN - What is in your future work/music wise?/p pMichael Buckholtz: The future for Aid for Autistic Children Foundation is to continue building its visibility. I want it to have the recognition of the Red Cross. When one hears “Red Cross”, we know help is on its way. I'm working to develop that kind of reputation for AACF, Inc./p pAs for the music, I'm also branching into movie scoring, gaming music and corporate commercials. Music, custom autos and motorcycles are kind of synonymous, so, I will be designing vehicles to auction off or simply display at auto shows to increase funding and visibility to AACF, Inc. As Sir Richard Branson says, I'm gonna “Do good, have fun...and the money will come.” I'm not going to worry about the financial part for me. I never have. I'm only concerned about getting done for the autistic community what needs to get done. That takes planning, hard work, patience and endurance. I've got all of that./p p11) KHN - Last words and contact info/p pMichael Buckholtz: Huge hugs and thanks to everyone everywhere that has donated, participated and otherwise not hesitated to help Aid for Autistic Children Foundation, individuals in the autistic community or anyone with a disability. Everyone can contact us through a href="http://www.aacfinc.org" title="www.aacfinc.org"www.aacfinc.org/a, or snail mail us a donation or suggestion at:/p pAid for Autistic Children Foundation, Inc. c/o Admin Dept. P.O. Box 141 Macon, Georgia 30120-0141/p pTo support the recording artist Perrie Kitching, simply register at a href="http://www.PerrieKitching.com" title="www.PerrieKitching.com"www.PerrieKitching.com/a and become part of the music family that will be directly involved in raising awareness and funds for Aid for Autistic Children Foundation, Inc. along with other important charitable ventures. Supporting him supports those who are autistic, hungry, homeless and disabled. Thanks!/p

p nbsp;/p p My mama used to say, ldquo; Its different back East, thatrsquo;s why I came to California, I was seen as poor, span style=""nbsp; /spanblack, and unprotected, rdquo; she would go onto explain that race and class divisions were brutal and overt especially if you were a child without ldquo;peoplerdquo;, a mama, a family or folks watching over, you were viewed as easy prey. Throughout my life growing up I heard snatches of horror stories of sexual predation, abuse and racism that my mama had experienced as a poor mixed race orphan in one of over 22 foster homes and orphanages across the state of Pennsylvania.span style=""nbsp; /spanMy poor mamarsquo;s indelible scars ripped apart again in my mind as I heard about the sexual predation against 8 boys perpetrated by Penn State Footballrsquo;s former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and his many accomplices./p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" My poor mama was the ldquo;bastardrdquo; child of an indigenous African/span data-scayt_word="Puerta" data-scaytid="1"Puerta/span Rican factory worker and a Roma/Irish teenage mother, both were immigrants without ldquo;papersrdquo; In fact her mama, an abused woman on the run from a severely abusive marriage and three children, had tried to ldquo;sellrdquo; my mama in the Philadelphia Inquirer to the highest bidder, until she gave up and gave my mama up to the state as a ward of the court. ldquo;I wasnrsquo;t supposed to be born, I was a serious mistake, rdquo; my mama used to say, her blank eyes revealing a deep broken place that is permanently lodged inside my heart./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" My mamarsquo;s brown body was sexually violated over 200 times by the time she was 2 years old. I know the details of the whole horrible story, because after my mama passed, I found her psychiatric evaluation and medical report from the state of Pennsylvania stuffed in between all of her many lost papers and scattered belongings. My mama never healed from the predation, like I know most child sexual abuse victims never do. Her scars NEVER healed and remained in her heart and mind informing all of her and our trauma-filled life.span style=""nbsp; /spanIt was why she became sick and eventually disabled. It was why she was terrified of being alone. And in the end it was why we became span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="2"houseless/span and forever unable to rise up from deep, unending poverty. It is why she protected me as fiercely as a lioness with he cub, no matter how crazy things got./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" As I read the dispatches from the corporate media, I scream for the 9 and ten year old boys who were raped by this man. I am unable to sleep in empathy with their unending pain and un-protected bodies. It is not clear from the grand jury report if the victims of Jerry Sandusky were black or brown, but they were most definitely ldquo;poorrdquo; or as the coded words describe, ldquo;underprivilegedrdquo; aka vulnerable./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" This real life horror story is about so many things, but the first and most pronounced is white male privilege and white supremacy. The way in which white men operate with impunity, violence and arrogance in so many worlds. From the sports industry, US Un-justice system, span data-scayt_word="akkkademia" data-scaytid="3"akkkademia/span, business and philanthropy. In this case that meant the benevolent head coach, elder Joe span data-scayt_word="Paterno" data-scaytid="4"Paterno/span was able to kick down an access crumb to, Mike span data-scayt_word="Mcquery" data-scaytid="8"Mcquery/span, who was a direct witness to the rape of a child by an adult male, Jerry Sandusky, and how that access crumb, was enough to silence the issue forever. How the president of the school reported nothing after being reported to by span data-scayt_word="Paterno" data-scaytid="5"Paterno/span, except to take span data-scayt_word="Sanduskys" data-scaytid="9"Sanduskys/span keys to the locker room away from him, so he would have to rape the children elsewhere. How his wife and his ldquo;non-profit organizationrdquo; were complicit, covering for him, ldquo;looking the other wayrdquo; when he would bring children into their own home to rape, because they were benefiting from his pimping. How it ended up with a slap on the wrist to Sandusky, because the judge. like almost everyone else in that town, owes span data-scayt_word="Paterno" data-scaytid="6"Paterno/span or Sandusky a favor. In contrast, span style=""nbsp; /spanBay Arearsquo;s own Fly span data-scayt_word="Benzo" data-scaytid="10"Benzo/span who did nothing to anyone except be African Descendent and young and have a powerful voice received the same amount of bail ($95,000.00) as Sandusky and was held in jail for over a week, while Sandusky, a brutal rapist of children sat in a bar having a drink, five hours after being charged. And finally, why when span data-scayt_word="Paterno" data-scaytid="7"Paterno/span was fired by the board of trustees, hundreds of white college students rioted, set fires and smashed windows and not one arrest was made, while thousands of people are arrested in the US for the sole act of sleeping on the streets because they are poor and have no home./p p class="MsoNormal" span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;"According to a story, a href="http://sfbayview.com/2011/are-poor-black-boys-easy-targets-for-sexual-predators/"Are poor, black boys easy targets for sexual predators?/a by Edward span data-scayt_word="Wyceff" data-scaytid="11"Wyceff/span Williams which appeared in the Bay View Newspaper, this kind of predation occurs in several organized sports industries. From basketball teams to baseball, any of the places and spaces where our children are blindly being sent by trusting parents, with no expectation of these kinds of acts of brutality on our babies./span/p p class="MsoNormal" It came out later that there is no mandated reporter status in place in Pennsylvania like they have in California, a law which is also highly problematic and enables all kinds of abuse, but at least mandates that anyone in the care of children must report abuse of children whether they want to or not rather than go to papa span data-scayt_word="Paterno" data-scaytid="12"Paterno/span and ldquo;confessrdquo; and then get a promotion to shut up like span data-scayt_word="Mcquery" data-scaytid="13"Mcquery/span did./p p class="MsoNormal" I believe it is truly impossible to get any kind of fair trial in span data-scayt_word="“Paterno-town”" data-scaytid="15"ldquo;Paterno-townrdquo;/span and I hope that the FBI launches a true investigation into the corruption and trafficking that was openly happening in that town, which was so large that the Sandusky/span data-scayt_word="Paterno" data-scaytid="14"Paterno/span mafia assassinated the district attorney, Ray span data-scayt_word="Gricar" data-scaytid="16"Gricar/span, who was investigating the case./p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" But in the end these boys could be raped and violated like this because of the lie of the benevolent white male philanthropist (or what I call span data-scayt_word="“philanthro-pimp”" data-scaytid="17"ldquo;philanthro-pimprdquo;/span), only there to do ldquo;goodrdquo; like the priests, span data-scayt_word="slaveholders" data-scaytid="18"slaveholders/span and colonizers before them, using that blind trust to wage brutal war on the bodies of poor peoples, poor children, and children of color, because they could, and because of who they are, no-one was watching. Or, like my mama, because they are poor, no-one was caring.span style=""nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; /span/p

I didnrsquo;t know why there were so many people there, I was only 10 years old./p p That day, as if I knew that that day my father was going to leave the house that day. I remember it very well, the sun was so hot that it made everything tremble like butterflies from the distance. My father showered and the whole time he smiled as if he wasnrsquo;t in pain. He said that he would go to a doctor that evening. He told everyone there to construct a chair to carry him cuz he had lost all his energy and could not walk. While my dad waited for his friend Don Lito, which was what he called him, he brought him a pineapple soda called Tyky./p p It was like 2 orsquo;clock in the afternoon, my father sat in his char in the front yard, smiling he said, ldquo;God bless you my children, today I leave but I will come back soon if God permits, as he waited for his chair to be built to carry him. He had not eaten a whole month. But he was not happy with what they brought him and said, ldquo;Bring the horse and put on her saddle, I want to leave soon.rdquo; He wanted to go to the doctor the soonest possible. He was so excited about what my brother had written to him. He held me tight, I remember it well as if it would happen now. He said, rdquo;good bye my dryness.rdquo; He gave me two kisses saying, ldquo;today I leave to heal myself and come back healthy and see you all grow, and one day leave this place. where nobody wants us./p p He mounted his horse with his blue jacket like the clear sky on the summer afternoons and his shoes shined like mirrors. He started to leave and after like 20 feet of walking he turned to look at us and he smiled. He looked beautiful as my father always was, even though one of his eyes was almost closed and he took off ridding until we could no longer see him, I never imagined that it would be the last time I would see him smile. Within a week that he left, my sister and me went to the capital, because he needed a caregiver. I went happily because I would be with him again. But to my surprise he was already registered at the hospital. My sisters would go and visit him but I couldnrsquo;t enter the room because I was only 10 years old and only 14 year old children could enter./p p Until one 26 of November I went inside a car and the driver asked my sister ldquo;Have you guys told her yet?rdquo; My sisters looked at me and one of them said, I#39;m going to tell you some thing but swear to me that you won#39;t cry in front of my boss.rdquo; At that moment I felt electric shocks all over my body and I asked, span data-scayt_word="“whats" data-scaytid="1172"ldquo;whats/span wrong?rdquo; She told me, ldquo;Well donrsquo;t cry, but daddy has died.rdquo; I wanted to cry , scream, bite or I didnrsquo;t know what to do since I had promised not to cry and from that day on my life was in ruins, my heart was broken by the cancer that took away my father. My life disappeared with him and I hope to God that I find him in the heavens. Even after 25 years of my father left his memory and his caresses remain alive in my mind and in my heart. p nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; There have been so many amazing articles, poems, blog posts and comments written by poor folks, people of color, and others whose stories and communities are not being centered in the ldquo;Occupyrdquo; movement. Because those stories and communities were not even taken into account in the planning of the ldquo;Occupations, rdquo; people from those communities are now having to tell organizers with white privilege and class privilege whatrsquo;s up - after things are already off and running.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Irsquo;m writing from Philadelphia. I donrsquo;t even know where to start with the hope and rage and unbelievable emotional risks.nbsp; I do have the resources to free up my time and allow me to be involved, I benefit from white privilege, I have a college education and connections in Philadelphiarsquo;s ldquo;activist span data-scayt_word="community.”" data-scaytid="1"community.rdquo;/spanbr / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; I donrsquo;t know whatrsquo;s going on in other cities, but in Philly, the ldquo;Occupationrdquo; has tents, clothing and food, daily, for hundreds and hundreds of span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="3"houseless/span folks. Shelter numbers are at record lows for this time of year ndash; here, no government officials are breathing down your neck and you donrsquo;t have to trade in your freedom of movement during the day in exchange for a place to sleep at night. The police and city-funded shelters are actually sending people to us, and I think this is a conscious strategy to overwhelm our resources and shut us down.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; They already demanded that protestors move the shanty that span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="4"houseless/span people erected in the space, and the General Assembly attendees had to vote to stand by the shanty, and stand up to City Hall. We will only face more decisions like this. Many ldquo;occupiersrdquo; will have to let go their white and class privileges and stand by the poor, will have to stop span data-scayt_word="scapegoating" data-scaytid="7"scapegoating/span immigrants and Jews and fearing people of color, will have to blame the capitalist system for the dehumanization of all of us ndash; instead of blaming each other. One of our span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="5"houseless/span neighbors holds a sign: ldquo;I am the real 99%.rdquo;br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Tiny from POOR Magazine is so on it when she talks about passing out information and doing political education.nbsp; Wersquo;ve got a lot of middle-class or formerly-middle-class white folks who have never engaged with issues of class struggle or corporate greed or mass injustice in America, at least not in public, and definitely not in big groups of people coming from a bunch of different experiences. There is a major need to be filled here for political education and learning histories of Philadelphia communities. Therersquo;s an opportunity to open up to how we are all wounded, and wounding others, with our (explicit or implicit) racism and colonizer mindset.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; A group of us have been holding regular workshops and conversations about white privilege and racism in the movement. Each time we do this more people come up who really want to center issues that affect poor and working communities of color right here in Philly. They leave excited to support the People of Color working group in the fight against this new curfew bill up for debate in City Council. The curfew laws are gentrification laws: they are only enforced against poor and working youth of color and their parents, and they play off other peoplersquo;s fears in order to keep the ldquo;wrongrdquo; people out of specific areas of the city theyrsquo;re span data-scayt_word="gentrifying" data-scaytid="8"gentrifying/span to attract shoppers and developers.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Also, every time we hold conversations about this, white folks will come up and try to disrupt us. Theyrsquo;ll say that every time we talk about race we are just distracting from the movement and making it weaker. Theyrsquo;ll say that race is a tool to divide us (true) and that when we talk about it at all, we are playing into a trap and doing exactly what ldquo;theyrdquo; want us to (FALSE).nbsp; This is only one small example of the messed up things have happened in our cityrsquo;s ldquo;Occupation, rdquo; too, like in so many. I wonrsquo;t go into more details ndash; not to let this movement off the hook, but to avoid unnecessarily triggering people. Irsquo;ll just say that they range from aggressively colorblind to explicitly racist, and they make me realize how much fear wersquo;re up against.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Lots of ldquo;Occupiersrdquo; donrsquo;t want us to organize around the curfew laws because they think the People Of Color working group is fringe and that making gentrification a core issue will be divisive.nbsp; Another class-privileged white activist and I are planning to pass out information about how the curfew and gentrification laws are central to our movement for economic justice, and we will probably field a lot of push-back from those people.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; So many of us have felt marginalized by white and middle/owning-class and male-dominated movement work. So many of us, for so many reasons, know what it is like to get that you are on the outside. You donrsquo;t talk right, you donrsquo;t look right, you donrsquo;t love right, you donrsquo;t have the time, you donrsquo;t have the energy, you are on the outside.nbsp; When Irsquo;m getting that feeling from organizers at Occupy Philly, I try to fight my way in when that feels like the right thing to do.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; But people like me are also trying to never lose that outsiderrsquo;s perspective. Wersquo;re trying tell everyone that criticism from people who we have pushed to the outside, knowingly or not, is a gift - not a threat. Articles from POOR Magazine and blog posts and letters and speeches calling on this movement to let go of white supremacy and loyalty to the ldquo;middle classrdquo; are all incredible gifts. Theyrsquo;re offerings from the outsiderrsquo;s eye that we have to take and learn from if we want this struggle to go anywhere good.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Yes, we still have to defend this movement to the people who think the status quo is fine and protest is a waste of time. But silence about how wersquo;re treating each other ndash; including the span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="6"houseless/span people who are our neighbors at the encampments ndash; will not help us now or in the long run. We have to keep being outspoken and honest, and we have to love and appreciate each other for demanding that we do this better.br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;/p p nbsp;/p
