    Boy's, Young men, Guy's
Blunt The Power, Blunt The Power
    That be.

    Observe, Learn, De-stablize this
power by making cell phones one more usefull
machine one can do without easily.

    by Joe B.

    This is Pt.4 of C-Phones, here’s where I begin.

Yeah, women are emotionally stable and above using technology to manipulate their personal situations.
[Just like all top chef’s are women and men aren’t good at nurturing children.]

Nah, women don’t force men into emotional investments they just nudge it in their favor].

Now you know why I always say "Get All The Rejections Out Of The Way."
So you can have the 1 or 2 yes’s that’s what I need it may take a long time but its worth getting rid of player-fun girls/women for serious mature relationships and not just… bed-good by-females.

Women as usual are better at it because they use both left and right hemisphere’s of the brain.

Most men either because of societal or cultural upbringing are trapped with one side more dominant than the other.

I believe men can do this too if we keep switching right to left as women do.

As with everything there always exceptions to every rule. So, they have lots of male’s to choose from and men have a two or three days to call or they’re deleted from the phones memory.

No fuss, pain, or heated arguments just off-line. Thing is, for many its mere dalliance to show how desirable they are without doing the actual deed, pre-electron notches of potential lovers.

Men can play the game one of three ways.

    1) Play it the way women have it now advantage theirs.
    2) Do the same as woman advantage to male’s.
    3) Go to same bars/clubs or where ever both sexes mix, see which women collect phone number’s. refuse to play any of the games.

What women and men really think of all the tricks of emotional in-jokes on evolving cell phone power plays? ….Bye.

PS, I can go on but men and especially women know the spiel on emotive, manipulative power they wield when they chose to use can be vicious, arbitrary, mean spirited, spiteful and once turned on is hard to resist such heady power unless it balanced and equal.

For most women they know the balance for others its too easy to make males keep paying even the men now paying are not the ones who’ve offended them in the place.

"The make ‘em all play becomes "the evil that women" as opposed to men do. Think about it.
Want to say something about what I’ve said by all means do. Bye.

    Participant/Observer. ...

    Is it an oxymoron?

    One learns to split focus.

It can make a better writer, but not
    a good reporter.

    by Joe B.

Yesterday, Sunday a protest/rally march in honor of the late Farm Workers and human rights activist Cesar Chavez.

Its began from Embarcadero to Civic Center Plaza across frome and under the gold plated dome of City Hall.

Being late for I think "Oh, no not late again?"

But thankfully I’m wrong as I ride a 14 bus to 1st. and Mission Street.

It looks like every peace bead, T-shirt, paper and pamphleteer are out giving out or selling wares.

With a peace sigh written by Ms. M. Villaluna which has Chavez’s and Vera Cruz’s names on them I can enter the march while taking photo’s.

Its difficult participating and being part of the march but one does what must be done.

Why is it when there is a choice of foods to by I never have funds for them?

Drinking water and like others waiting for the march to begin.

I got to the rear so as not to upstage anyone or organization in the march concentrating on the job at hand.

It began past the 12 noon hour give or take 20 minutes.

Way in front are people wearing ancient Aztec costumes with drums and voices blaring, behind me are four men on horseback dressed in sombrero’s and

    Mexican cowboy outfits.

I make sure not to stumble and took at least on picture of them and Aztec dressed persons then take cross sections and close ups of people in the march.

Behind a man with a guitar singing and others I joined in and begin doing double duty as part of the marching contingent and shooting pictures while in it.

By 6th Street I’m well ahead of the march and used Bart to be at Civic Center where I saw food, clothes, and numerous trinkets for sale.

My first priority is finding an empty portable bathroom to for bladder relief.

Luckily not many people are there yet so aim, pee, shake, and shake once more and I’m ready to sit on the grass and do some Yoga forms taking out any kinks in my body.

Cross legged, flat on my back, four breaths slowly in and out is relaxing until. "Here come the first wave or marchers" said someone through a bullhorn.

Slow and reluctantly feeling each vertebrae of my spine into a full upright cross legged sit.

The first wave are coming my way across the grass.
Unwound, standing up from my cross legged position I walk toward unforgiving cement.

The last thing I did was again look and listen to Aztec dressed people dance to rhythm of drums leaving when part of it was over walking up the left side of Polk Street’s shaded side to return camera and sign.

With that done I thought of the block party on Shotwell Street in the Mission District deciding on festival is all I could stand for now.

A march for a great man event though to me the crowd seems to be less than last year it could be only my perception and more bodies might have joined in
    without me noticing.

My job’s over now to walk home shower and have a well deserved rest.

One always should rest when given a chance or take it when its not. Bye.

  • Mom's Day/Other Things. As in Rest and Getting Out of the city a bit.

Its always a good day either
visiting the city or being out of
    it for a few days.

    After all how much
perfection of can a guy take?

    by Joe B.

Well, Mother’s Day is over Father’s Day coming up soon.

Leaving the city for awhile is like a roman holiday.

Sometimes one must get out of ones living space to visit others spaces.

Besides when I’m out of the city the stress is also left behind for a day or two.

I wish it was longer but for now a few days will have to do.

Say, [Hypothetically] I wrote a book or two turning fiction, non fiction, mystery or which ever genre into a real career.

How would I find rest after being on plane, trains, and/or car junkets riding, sleeping through other cites and signing autographs.

I’d first call the agent, publisher, publicist informing them that I need a few weeks rest and relaxation before getting back on the grind of book promotion.

My cell phone, land phone, PC’s, (both portable laptop and desktop home bound computer.)

I may visit friends, if married mow the lawn, play with the children too.

Mostly having quiet days doing nothing at all besides various types of Yoga both physical and mental disciplines further calming me, dating women if I’m still single.

Then to work of signing autographs, speaking to people about the book or books written, offered commercial work and/or story ideas for a next book to work on.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be a successful writer or if it happens how to handle the fame, adulation, my anonymity for a time gone.

But I do know overwork is no way to live and whenever one has a chance to catch a breath do it.

It may never happen but its good practice to stay grounded so my ego don’t swell up my head and I act like a fool.

Ever see the commercial when a group of guys in a car are driving down a highway and one guy says "Duck!" and there is a real duck on the wet road and they swerve to avoid it?

Years ago it would have been crunch, thud, or splat and one more bloody, flattened, dead duck.

In the car liquid spills as the car flips over and two guys pants are splattered one guy’s pants is completely clean despite the spill while the first one is wet.

If not the first its an early use of nanotechnology.
(I’m building up to some- thing worry not folks)

Nanotechnology [nanometre scale, which is about one billionth of a metre or about 80,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

If you divided the edge of a dime 1,000 times and divided each sliver another 1,000 times, you would reach the nanometre scale.

Anyone remember "Deep Red" about life saving/extending technology hidden in cigarettes manufactured secretly on earth?

The cigarettes are radically different unlike anything produced on earth by tobacco growers.

First they don’t poison but improve, lengthen the lives of people smoking them.

They also regenerate dead tissues using advanced cellular regeneration.

I read in one of those weird newspapers you know "living vampires, Hitler’s Clone, or frozen Viking flash frozen 1,200 years discovered in a glacier.

True or not nano-technology will be one of many seemingly miracle sciences that will subtly change our lives in ways unimagined.

I’m absently thinking of this Thursday night waiting for a 49 bus on Van Ness and Market Street as cold winds blow.

All weather clothes instantly adjust to summer/ winter/spring/fall climates monitoring human body adjusting to his or her skin temperature.

How about liquid gel capsules with both minerals, trace minerals, vitamins in them once taken orally or by injection nano machines supply human bodies the exact balance of all the substances by the day, week, month, or year.

Personally, I’d like natural or improved artificial melanin safely built up in me making me darker and protecting me from ultraviolet rays.

As an added benefit it could also aid in execrating cellular repair on molecular level becoming routine as taking aspirin or vitamins are now.

Is it me or are we standing, heading backward, or standing still in technology in spite of Nanotechnology and Genome Sciences advances?

Please inform me if right or tell me if I’m not. Bye.

Prop N is challenged in court and…loses

by Tiny, Clive Whistle and Dee/PoorNewsNetwork

Gavin Newsome had a million dollar media campaign, we had people. He had the power and glory of the Getty’s… we had poor folks that are fighting the slings and arrows of our constant struggles to survive, thrive and stay alive. He had most of the mainstream media, We had the independent media and its grassroots base He had the power of a board supervisor. We had advocates who dedicate their lives to the struggles of civil and human rights. And finally, we had truth and he had the hand over fist lies of a well-funded impending mayors race.

So what happened? Well, two brave women, Nora Roman and Linda Pettye represented by attorneys from The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights brought on a lawsuit to enforce the general assistance standards of aid and care established by The SF Board of Supervisors and to refrain from implementing the challenged provisions of Proposition N

Specifically, the changes that would reduce the cash assistance given to houseless San Franciscans from the already meager $320.00 to $59.00 per month, with the alleged proviso that those monies would go to pay for food and shelter beds. Now anyone who is a reader of PNN and The SF Bayview knows there was no guarantee that there would be a shelter bed for these recipients in part because there aren’t enough shelter beds in existence now and the ones that there are are already being fought for by the several thousand houseless folks in the City, so the root of this “law” was based on lies and mistruths. (See Economic and racial cleansing #101 by PNN)

The dispute is based on the fact that although the measure was approved by voters – the “care and aid” standards for houseless San Franciscans are “clear and unambiguous” in that they are in fact set by The SF board of Supervisors and a very similar legislation was presented to the Board in 2002 and was struck down.

The proponents of Prop N argued that in fact the law was not that clear and could be established by the local legislative process. There were several other cases and issues cited in this landmark case (please see The Prop N Case)

Finally, Honorable Judge Quidachay (California Superior Court) ruled in favor of the petitioners (Roman and Pettye) that they were on point and that the standards for care were delegated by The SF Board of Supervisors.

But the scariest reality is while The Federal Government spends16 billion on “faux emergencies” in Seattle aka Homeland Security’s new project causing endless budget shortfalls in local and state governments across the nation; the corporate media, the power, the money and the alleged caregivers of the poor themselves, SF Department of Human Services(DHS) are still frenetically figuring out how to get around this ruling and target the poor as was proudly reported Tuesday to the SF Chronicle by DHS representatives.

“They are still implementing prop N before there’s a prop N as we speak” , Shelter correspondent, Clive Whistle reported to me today, “ Sendin’ folks all over town to get fingerprinted and photographed and telling all of us disabled folks and any seniors in the shelters that this ruling does not protect us and we’re still gonna lose our beds”

After hearing from Clive, we contacted Oren Sellstrom, one of the attorneys who worked on the case to ask him how exactly the ruling would protect folks, “ We are not totally clear yet how it will affect other residents of the shelters – but the first thing it does is to not let DHS take the cost of a shelter, food and services out of people’s GA checks”

The day ended for PNN reporters when we went to the pro-Newsom rally that proceeded the City Council meeting, which was eloquently referred to by PNN reporter Joseph Bolden as “a 1930’s like fascist mob” . We all became very scared not so much because we were surrounded by hundreds of people believing the words of this privileged politician without questioning any of his facts, but because they were so utterly clueless. “I voted for Prop N cause something has to be done about the homeless problem” ,stated a Mr. Wyn Johnson loudly when I asked this Newsom supporter how he felt about the fact that this “didn’t solve the homeless problem, but in fact made it worse by evicting seniors and disabled folks from shelter beds and onto the street – he replied, “ Well, I don’t believe that” and looked away from me and toward the glistening Mr. Newsom for more vague statements.

I think I completely tuned out when Newsom said to the salivating crowd, “ this is only the first step…..”

The City Council meeting that followed the rally was filled with the scholarship of several advocates like Steve Williams (POWER) and Paul Boden (Coalition on Homelessness) as well as the proposal of three “homeless” legislations from three different Board Supervisors- stay tuned for next weeks PNN report on where we go from here

    A band member's intelligent,
    sensitive Q&A Benefit.

    I gave a statement that's all.

    by Joe B.

Ok, I another foul up on Greek God’s. Before God’s when Titan’s roam new, pristine earth.

Uranus (his father has been raping his wife (Cronos’s) Mother Oceana, Mother Earth.

She complains to her son about Uranus continuous ravaging of her making, she loves her children created from her but Uranus is rapidly killing her, she has no rest from his eternal procreating lust.

Guess there is no alternative for the kid than castrating his father throwing his phallus into the sea.

Later Chrono’s swallows all his children soon as their born except for Zeus who later beats the Titan’s trapping them below earth.

Whew, must read up on them an other mythical figures and relearn lessons taught by these flawed God’s from ages long gone but remembered.

Sunday was a combo birthday party and benefit for POOR Magazine.

It was held inside the Woman’s Building at 18 and Valencia Street in San Francisco, $3 at the door.

The main question & answer man was by Mr. Ian Mackaye (pronounced Ky, think of eye with a K).

He is a song writer, guitarist, singer in the band named Fugazi and co-owner of Dischord Records and also
(long time main driver) of the group in their early days when going to and from gigs.

He was on vacation visiting relatives when other people and he decide to give a benefit Q&A session with much of the proceeds going to POOR Magazine.

Me, with my clean brain, good ears, was thing lots of screaming guys, women in skimpy, giggling outfits…
(So I’m wrong about yelling guys but young girls in skimpy outfits true enough for some of ‘em.")

For the first time in years I’m a guest to watch proceedings like every one while Ms. Ashley, and Dharma two of POOR Magazines shining spoken word poets explained about POOR and were able to enjoy the goings on at the same time.

After a time Dee and Tiny show up for a few micro seconds then depart.

I finally was having enough fun listing to Mr. Ian talk that I better relieve one of the women or some angry Goddess will be pissed off and I never wish to anger any Goddess its not a healthy thing for males to do.

There was a point after Mr. Mackaye recounted inside happenings of being the road, stupid things happening, and personal revelations other people began answering questions so short and simple, others so complex the original questions had gotten lost but Mr. Mackaye always got it back on track to essential basics – improvement of the human condition.

Mr. Mackaye said "he wanted to still do not write about what’s past.

"All I said, raising my hand is "You write songs?"
    "Yes."

    "Play guitar and sing?"
    "Yes."

"When you write your book… and you will, it’s a verb-something you do, it’s a solitary verb but your doing something.

"I don’t know if I sounded that eloquent probably not but I didn’t want him feeling he was ending something because he was writing of his life and times.

But its more him and people will read even if he thinks they won’t.

People are mostly curious and they’ll read what he’s written.

After closing up, we shake hands both saying thanks before Ashley and I drove the precious money to its intended destination.

Ashley and I hug, I wave bye, she drives off in her car.

It’s a warm night its good walking home late at night most times I’m already home reading a book or sometimes across the bay in another bed sleeping.

    I didn’t make it tonight, I’m feelin’, it’s a good day. ….Bye.

An interview with the illustrator of the new childrens' book; Walter the Farting Dog

    A PNN ReViEwSfOrTheRevOluTion

    by Alex Cuff/PoorNewsNetwork

About the same time as we began POOR Press, Dee noticed a great little book with an animal rights theme and
beautiful illustrations. Dee wanted to know more about the book's origins. Lucky for us, we were able to locate
the illustrator, Audrey Colman, and ask her all the questions about Walter the Farting Dog and her
    illustrations.

Why do you oppose breeding? (as you mentioned in one of your emails) Does
it have anything to do with "dog classism?"
Actually, I don1t believe in domestication at all, let alone breeding, while
I do acknowledge our responsibility to care for the domestic animals that
    are already here.

The breeding industry perpetuates the killing of countless healthy animals
by adding to the numbers of animals that are killed simply for lack of
homes. Making money through breeding and selling animals to those who wish
to acquire a status symbol pet rather than rescue one from a shelter is an
ugly business. Those who buy from breeders fund this blood industry, which I
equate with the selling of people in the slave trade. And when living beings
become "products", one can only imagine what happens to the "imperfect" ones
that are less "profitable". Finally, every one litter results in thousands
more in a short span of years. The industry should be shut down entirely.
Any one of us who has real empathy for other species would gladly forfeit
the joy of living with them and getting to know them in order for them to be
    free from our tyranny.

Why were you chosen (or did you choose?) as the illustrator for Walter the
    Farting Dog?

I'd sent some of my art to the publisher, North Atlantic Books, Frog Ltd.,
many months prior to the introduction of "Walter" into the picture, in hopes
of doing the odd cover for them. When they called me with "Walter the
Farting Dog" (the first children's title for this publisher) by William
Kotzwinkle, I was very excited. I'd never forgotten his not-for-children
book "Dr. Rat", (1971) about the wretched reality of the lives of laboratory
animals. While it was written in a fictionalized style, it stayed true to
the graphic horror and details of their existence. Having been involved with
animal rights issues starting in Montreal in the late 1970's, I'd
recommended this book to many over the years.

What are you thoughts on the relationship between humans and animal (in
    body and spirit and myth)?

I think that we as a species are the most destructive and the most cruel of
all animals. We are so elitist a species that our tiniest whim takes
precedence over the life and death of any animal of another species. (I
won't comment on the latter part of your question because to me the word
"spirit" pertains only to one's mood or an emotional state, probably not
your intended meaning, and I have no interest in mythology, so the word
"myth" also has little meaning for me.)

What role do you think animals play in our lives?

I think that as the most destructive of all species, people tend to consider
other species more in terms of how they can serve our needs or even our
whims rather than simply respecting their sentience and their right to live
their lives free of our manipulation and control. And ironically we deem
ourselves the exalted species, singularly infused with enough intelligence
to feel compassion!? Yes, I'm jaded from years of meeting with human apathy
regarding any animals aside from our own species.

In the lives of indigenous people?

For far too long, human culture/customs of all sorts have been considered
    sacred.
I also think that many people naively romanticize the relationship between
indigenous people and other species. I don1t see a significant difference in
their treatment of non-human animals. Giving "thanks" to victims before
murdering them does nothing to diminish their fear or pain.

One example of animals treatment by indigenous people, the Siouxan nations
perpetrated pishkun, or buffalo jumps, wherein entire herds were panicked
and driven off cliffs, at the foot of which the people waited to spear and
club to death the broken bodies.

Another example involves the Hopis, who are still "legally" allowed to hunt
eagles, endangered or not, because it1s an ancient custom/ritual. Upon
capture, the terrified eagles are tethered with a leather band to the
rooftop of the capturer1s house and kept there for about 16 days. On the
final day, the eagles are smothered. The prayer during this time is one for
good fortune and happiness for all creatures. I think think it1s safe to say
that the eagles would be happier without the imprisonment, murder and
    prayers.

Are you familiar with the "master animal"?

    No

How does any, all, or none of this relate to Walter?

It doesn't directly relate to "Walter", but when the project was first
offered to me, I was thrilled that it was written by William Kotzwinkle,
author of Dr. Rat, one of my all-time favorite animal rights-themed books.
Walter does encourage acceptance of foibles, and appreciation for of all
sorts of dogs, not just the stereotypically "cute" types.

And North Atlantic Books, Frog Ltd., acknowledging my interest in doing
more animal rights-oriented stories, did encourage me to go ahead with a
story of my own that has a pro animal theme. "Francine Francine the Beach
Party Queen" will be out this May. A dog's story that people who love dogs
can relate to, based on issues that dogs actually deal with, Francine's
familiar message has a twist, addressing a deficit in the children's book
market in relation to animal rights issues. I wanted people to commiserate
with Francine without her having to act like a small person in a dog suit.
Her plight encourages empathy and love while making us laugh.

People and other animals are alike in more ways than we realize, and dogs,
for example, frequently suffer indignities and hurt as a result our
    misunderstanding them.

Eventually I hope to do a portrait book of rescued dogs and cats together
    with their biographies.

Dutton (a division of Penguin) will be publishing the next two Walter the
    Farting Dog sequels.

Poor, artists and Oakland residents protests Mayor Jerry Brown’s housing policies

by Kathleen Kirkwood/Staff Writer, OAKLAND TRIBUNE

OAKLAND – Mayor Jerry Brown, loyal supporter of the arts, wasn’t applauding Wednesday’s live performance from his balcony seat at City Hall.

Two dozen recently evicted artists and supporters set up a temporary tent city outside City Hall to Illustrate their concerns about the “Jerry-Fication” of Oakland.

Costumed artists carried signs, others played bongos and one sat in the corner of a painted cardboard house.

They were protesting what they see as Brown’s support for gentrification of Oakland’s low income neighborhoods, where live- work lofts were once both cheap and easy to come by.

Some went face-to-face with Brown over his policies in a heated exchange in the mayor’s office, during a press conference.

“There are a lot of artists that have nowhere else to go,” Lisa Garcia, a recent evictee and founder of POOR Magazine, told the mayor. She urged him to use his clout to promote just cause eviction laws, saying Oakland tenants needed protection from the surging real estate market.

Brown countered that he didn’t favor such “rigid” laws. “I don’t think someone should stay somewhere 30 days and be allowed to stay there for the rest of their life.”

At one point Brown told a protester, “The city is not going to be slumified – it’s going to be improved.”

Someone asked him, “You think low-income housing is slumifi- cation?” and Brown replied, “No.”

The mayor asked Garcia to provide him with a list of recent evictees, saying he could see whether there was any way to help them.

The mayor said the city is preparing to roll out an affordable housing strategy in coming weeks, amounting to $100 million from several sources of funding.

The performance and tent city lasted about an hour before being dismantled. City officials didn’t intervene or confront the protesters.

Most of the artists wearing “evicted” labels at the event are residents of a 10-unit building at 1255 26th St. in West Oakland. Those residing in three of the units were recently given 30-day eviction notices to be out by the end of the month.

Others are worried they may be next.
John Protopappas, whose property management company, Madison Park, manages the building for owner Mak Siu Shuen, said the reason for the evictions is that the three units are being repaired.

But Nils Frykdahl, a musician who has lived in a loft here for 10 years, said the repairs had been needed for years. Many artists fixed up their lofts, he said.

Frykdahl and others suspect the owner is fixing up his property because West Oakland has become more desirable of late.

Frykdahl was wearing a styrofoam cube on his head – fitting into his painted cardboard house.

Although he looked in Oakland, Frykdahl said he couldn’t find anything affordable. He’s considering moving into a converted stable in San Leandro, he said.

“I don’t think it’s possible to stop the march of money into his area.” “I voted for Jerry because he said he would support artists. I don’t want to move.”

    Temporary occupant.

    by Joe B.

One last thing before going on to another subject.

Through the benefit last Sunday was a success I have shamefully neglected an item of personal importance.

Inside the Women’s building where the men’s room is a roll of toilet paper is set between two urinals.

Guy’s know what I mean, every time we think we’re finished urinating there’s always a few drops left and if we don’t vigorously shake or use tissue or paper towel to dry ourselves off there are wet spots on our pants where its supposed to be dry.

I Thank the Women’s Building for setting the roll between the stall and warnings on the painted wall and respecting the space by not adding graffiti to newly painted walls.

I seem never to get all my excess fluids out and usually have bits of tissue paper to wipe myself dry.

Not this time but thanks to the Women’s Building there’s no embarrassment I have enough worries about without tell tale wet spots on the front of my pants.

To a mystery business woman in San Francisco, thank you for your profile.

I’d like to take her to The Vagina Monologues (I’ve already read the book but haven’t seen video yet).

Hey, Folks this is my one way to actually answer someone taking the time to write me and thank her for doing that knowing she has a hectic busy life.

Now, I’ve heard about the Myan Calendar, their sudden disappearance and the 2012 date for some massive visitation by a massive object in 36,000 thousand year orbit.

I don’t know the how’s and why’s I just how this the equivalent of a hollow balsa wood object or an elaborate thirty six thousand year April fools joke.

Other dates as important if not more is 2020 + 2030.

This is because as far reaching life extension technologies improve and researches find ways to slow, reverse, or stop the aging process improves I don’t want to miss on possibly regaining years long gone like 24 to 35 or more.

Yes, these will be the tilt years when everything begins to speed up again.

A Selected ‘Prez and his pals have slowed our advancement, we’re still in the fossil age of dead dino oil, petroleum products.

I believe the U.S.A. now a so called Hyper Power must use Hyper Science and blended technologies for the improved health of its citizens her then abroad.

Time for me to join Cryonics, Immortalist, organizations and for them to form new political parties.

Who wouldn’t want longer, healthier, lives?

Oh, forgot the vested interest in death-wardly mobile leaders of church’s, governments, funeral directors plus a few political and business official who might not want their constituents to leave their business or change political affiliations.

What does a worker do who has and extra 50 or more years do?

They can learn more, travel, start newer organizations, start their own businesses, or just have time for rest, recreation, travel, and meeting people.

See what’s happening with young grand parent’s, this is just the tip of an ongoing future and do believe being young won’t mean to much as age rejuvenation science makes it possible for people in their 60’s or over can slowly regain their youth while keeping their experience.

I don’t know how it’ll will but I’d like to be around to participate especially ingesting or inhaling life extending drugs, medicines, along with updating my own personal
    DGD[Digitized Genome Disks].

So if possible when changing any part of it I’ll be able see which are my artificial genes and original to updated improved ones.

I’m preparing now for a time not far away when the choice will be ours to not only cheat, beat, but also help our genes keep us younger, alive, and healthier.

I may sound like a nut but… readers, will you take a chance that I’m not?… Bye.

    Single Men go through
the motions of loving the single
    life.

    Marriage may sometimes drag
but its a couple working together.

    by Joe B.

Not a married man either because of personality or not seen as hubby or father figure or to much of something or not enough of whatever secret ingredients that makes single men eligible.

These days both women and men are not seeking marriage only a long term friendship with some close intimacy.

Its sex without the bother of commitment.

I don’t know how the process happens but by a kind of osmosis men or women and other sexual orientated people chose one another as life partners.

Problems arise when one partner needs more from the other.

Sex isn’t always the issue but emotional bonding and intimacy may be lacking that’s one of many why women seek emotional comfort from others than her spouse while males may get physical cravings.

Why do women not wanting to get married chose married men to mess around with?

Women have been known to say "He’s already married with children or none, knows his way around women [hmmm, keeping the wife happy, I want some of that, don’t love him just want to be loved, comforted well]

Batchelor’s tired of their single lives ready to love and marry one woman are the very ones these single women avoid because they’re not ready for the big
"C" [COMMITMENT] Just as men are skittish.

The most valuable of women and men in marriage is the incorruptible man.

Why would a single women go after a happily married man who does work, brings home the bacon with his wife’s help sharing chores and economics and not a stray, may look but knows touching is off limits.

I guess it’s the "unattainable man" thing and I don’t mean seduction of a gay man by a straight woman as a self challenge and ego boost.

Its going after a good provider, loyal friend, husband, father, son, brother, because of pure desire.

If the guy says no it gets her goat that she’s who may be fantastic looking and great in bed instead of saying oh well he becomes a challenge, a mountain to clime and mount.

When and if the hubby succumbs he is no longer a good man in anyone’s eyes but is an adulterer, beast, with the potential of wrecking his home.

Meanwhile the other woman is one proving all men are dogs except for the one man she can’t have because he is really incorruptible.

It seems once a man is married other women who wouldn’t notice him is more attractive and even more so with children.

The more he has to lose the better he looks them.

He doesn’t have to be anyone special fat, skinny, ugly, but if he’s married and has one or a few children some women just has have him.

I guess it’s slightly different with women who are more emotionally tied to their men and family but if they feel emotionally bereft they may seek it somewhere else.

I don’t know what sort of marriage material I am or if a woman would gamble on me at all but I do know having a fling with beautiful women even if one isn’t caught the emotional turmoil, secrets, are not worth the loss of a love wife and children.

Maybe I wouldn’t be a good husband in that I may not be attractive enough to be wanted by other women and wives like to know they have someone worth keeping.

Yet the good man, woman thing makes married boring and exciting at the same time.

The most attractive men and women may not be about looks at all but are committed to each other and that is always sexier that single hunting each other in dance clubs, bars, or strip joints.

Both married couple have been through the single scene, finally found the one and hopefully will stay together.

There’s an add in newspapers that says "Make Your married friends jealous."

The only problem is with all those partners everyday or week gets tiresome.

At first its great going out with different people but after a time this too can become a chore or go to new places meeting new people, and renew the process.

Meanwhile the couple who’ve see this, been there, done that will act as if they’re missing something, that life is less adventurous and tamer showing sad faces.

When their single friends leave the married couple look at each other, burst out laughing, check on babies, older children, if they have any and quickly walk not run upstairs for their own private party.

They’re glad not to live that so called life of freedom anymore that’s why they got married to get out if in the first place and never looked back.

There are times being single is great and ghastly
just as marriage can be beautiful at times or a drag. It all depends on how one lives.

I’ll probably remain single for awhile but love sneaks up on me unaware I won’t breaking Cupid’s arrows but picking them manually inserting them in deep into my heart making sure the love sticks.

As for divorce: that’s a realm I’ve haven’t experienced either but if men, women, and children want to tell me about it you know where to write.

Be ye Single, Married, Divorced, Separated, or Remarried.

Tell me how it really is people.… Bye.

    by Tiny

It was 8:30 on a hot Sunday morning at Venice Beach in LA. The sun had been out long enough to cook the asphalt into a black, steaming stew.

Warm tar vapors tose out of that simmering curry. On any other day it would have been too late already to achieve the special quiet an artist needs. But in Venice Beach, on a Sunday morning, only the pigeons were awake. And the saves lightly rippling against the shore.

A medley of swishing palm fronds and the thumps of the occasional runner blended into a cacophony of morning-nature as I swept the canvas with my strokes. I was far from the loud sounds of home, school, poverty and stress that filled my life on every other day.

Suddenly, I heard the low rumbling of an approaching car. The spray can in my hand dropped tohe ground, registering a tinggggggg. I looked up at my work, my art work, on the wall in front of me. I heard the loud ca-chunk of a thick door slam behind me, the heels of heavy boots hit the asphalt and then, “You’re under arrest.”

That was 13 years ago, and I was 14. I was taken to the police station, booked and released. If the Juvenile Crime Prevention Act as now proposed in Washington had been in place, I would have been tried and convicted as an adult, charged with a felony instead of a misdemeanor (under the act, $400 damage is automatically a felony) and served “hard” time for this art “crime.”

Consider the case of Lance Dolan, the 20-year-old San Francisco co “tagger”/artist currently serving a 16-month jail term for vandalism (read graffiti) under a sort-of three strikes law for repeat offenders. The idea is that if you remove young gang members from the streets by incarcerating them, you separate them from the influence of gangs. But this idea fails. The organization of gangs is most powerful in penal institutions and, just to survive, a mere gang wannabe/graffiti artist must become a full-fledged gang member while serving a jail sentence.

And so, the nagging questions: What is art? What makes something “vandalism” instead of site-specific public art?

For example, what of the art of Rigo, known for his large, single word messages on the walls of large San Francisco buildings?

What of Barry McGee, known for his graffiti, praised and sanctioned by art critics? How do we know “tagging” from a “text-based art piece” such as the conceptual work of Barbara Kruger?

And how should we look at fashion designers who borrow the look of the streets when creating $3,000 graffiti-inspired jeans?

Perhaps the difference is resources and education. I and most of my very poor friends never had the financial resources to go to art school, one of the channels to recognition in the visual arts, validation and a chance to leap inside the margins of acceptability.

My lack of access to an education, luck or financial resources ensured that my art would remain on the “outside” – and reliant on the art critiques of the Gang Task Force. My art and the art of Lance Dolan remain illegal, unsanctioned and undeserving of any title except “vandalism.”

Tagging: The act of writing of one’s name, initials or a message, i.e. a tag.

That’s a definition, but is tagging art? To which I answer, is Dada artist Marchel Duchamp’s found art urinal, which he entitled “Fountain” and entered in a 1913 art show, art?

What of the abstract expressionists in the 60s who splashed large – some would say ugly – globs of paint on a canvas and called it art? Was that more “art” than taggers’ works because the abstract expressionists owned the canvases – and often sold them for several thousand dollars – and taggers do not?

Other important questions are: What or who determines that the absence of graffiti on a wall makes it desirable? In other words, that the public lack of color, shape and form is the way things should be?

In indigenous cultures throughout history as well as in Greco-Roman times, it was normal to use walls for messages, images, the recording of history and art.

How have we created a society that is so enthralled with the cleanliness, blankness or whiteness of everything? The homogenous corporate aesthetic has become our norm.

Nationwide, communities converge for the “great neighborhood graffiti clean-up.” On one such graffiti clean-up in The City recently, a cleaner admitted that as soon as he cleaned the wall, someone would “tag” it.

Bu, never fear, the cleaner said, he would be there to “fix” it. Could it be that, in an odd way, a new form of marginal collaboration is in progress, or is it just another example of Americans working for the corporate vision, even if by default?

Solutions? Use some of the financial resources directed at gang task forces and building more prisons into well-developed art programs for inner city and poor rural school districts.

And, as we approach the millennium, we need to re-think our society’s notion of what is art and what is canvas. Otherwise, we will continue to incarcerate our most determined art-makers who are attempting, as are all artists, to be seen, heard and recognized.

    Clubbing isn't only for 21+
    and over.

The slower the beat the closer
    two bodies meet.

    Guess who invented Clubbing in
    the first place?

    by Joe B.

Last week in a bar with a few people I venture forth first buying a beer, going to the rear and given ear plugs began playing pool.

Enjoyable, peaceful, slow with music set at various speeds and emotive ranges it felt good.

Wrote of evolution and those that may have escaped mortality without dying, don’t know if any mortal has done that but it’s what I was pondering after playing pool and sitting around.

Three women, two guys dancing then four women by themselves I didn’t join in being my first time in the bar and didn’t want to disrupt the female vibe there.

The second time its easier especially going their quickly after work.

One glass, one bottle of beer and only DJ, and bartender are there.

A coworker arrived but left for a home meeting something about lease renewal she said she’d be back by 9 p.m.

Sure I’d wait my place is going through leasing too.

It got later, and later, but not many people came in.

By 9:25 p.m. I’m on my beer #2 this time in a bottle along with salted pretzels.

I wish I could wait longer but its time to leave even if I didn’t dance I am becoming comfortable in this Mission Street bar.

While riding the bus home I thought about women’s buried anger and how guys are always know and don’t car or don’t know and in the dark about what, how, when, to say stuff to them.

Did you get the 2nd one I tried to be as close to
    my first thought.

Me, sometime I admit I provoke angry, frustrated response from a girl or two because just as they see and laugh at us I do the same but lately I’ve thought what it can mean in future in femme/male relationships.

Thing can be an explosion as women’s pent up anger overflows.

Some of it has happened in tiny releases as if a valve to let water or steam out but the build up continues unless its fully let go the whole boiler room explodes.

That is what women are experiencing now and have been experiencing in decades past. They're already at bursting point all it takes is one jerk to set them off.

Don't worry Wimin, a stupid loud mouth jerk will make it happen; I just don't want to be in any women's crosshairs when she's at Ready. Aim. Fire.

They've held in so much psychic/physical pain for so long it won't take much for a spark to ignite emotional rage and That's all I can think of.

We, so called men better watch ourselves I don’t mean walking on eggshells around women its too stressful.

I myself have been making bonehead errors from waking up someone about video rentals they didn’t know was due in one day to being frantic about a Muni bus pass, then I was out all day and night for two days straight without calling as I’d usually do.

It’s a typical male dork stuff, sleeping around, doing my own "Whore of Babylon" getting home way past 2 sometimes 4 am.

Feeling unclean and free at the same time after showering the odor of a debauched afternoon or night to dawn then I feel refreshed.

Between my own somewhat safe sex lifestyle and a looming explosiveness of women’s justified full blown anger and violence I’d rather take their demanding, estrogen charged, separate lust from love, physical punishment.

It will leave me exhausted, trembling, afraid, psychologically shaken, feeling wretched, aching, and raw but limp and alive.

The other choice is being the eye of a woman or women’s ire, a raging storm of unfettered violence every bit as unforgiving and deadly.

Again, to be alive and breathing shallowly than caught in a woman’s maelstrom where killing is what really gets ‘em off psycho/physically.

From now on I’m stepping lightly, listening and
though won’t be no slave to them I’ll just be a bit more sensitive than in the past.

I want to live to be and old man with grandkids about be (Ok, they might be other people’s grandkids but I’ll be their favorite trusted play uncle.

I’ll be checking other bars, staying out being a male version of "W.O.B." You know what it means folks. … Bye

PS. Any bar hoppers out there know where watering holes are in and out the cities where dancing is optional and not automatic and dress codes are casual and no V.I.P. B.S.[you know what that means too].

Today I personally saw how it might begin happening!

Supervisor Gavin Newsome had a love in today with like minded people enthralled with his "Care Not Cash" slogan.

"Its hard, but we need a change" I paraphrase but its essentially what he said to his constituents.

Tiny and I from POOR Magazine and a few brave people from Coalition on Homelessness and organizations I didn’t get the names of others who braved crowds wishing Newsome well.

"We need more bullhorns." I say looking at the people-for-Newsome.

It didn’t feel right, like an ache in the pit of my belly began to churn much different than hunger pangs.

When Tiny heard about Newsome’s continuing bid for a flash finish mayor win using working poor and house-lessness she is hopping mad and tried calling up troops to be combat the ‘Nukem ‘um Newsome’s love fest over at City Hall, me, I thought we needed critical mass of people to be there for an even fight but its almost too late to gather our like minded anti-Newsome forces.

Weaving in and out of the crowd I see frustrated people who love their city to the point of voting in sweeping changes in a misguided, muddle headed thinking of saving their city from the so called masses of crack dealing, drinking, drug addicted houseless, jobless nomads.

    One slight, minor problem

Could that be next? No assets no votes?

Suddenly! It hit me when a man of color says to me
    "We Are The People!"

    I took issue with that
"You Are Not The People, you’re not all the people."
The nerve, The absolute gall to say because they’re in a larger group than we, that they consist of all the voices that day.

Obvious they don’t know or read human his/herstory or worse don’t care about the fact that this nation was founded, fought, blood spilled, lives lost by a determined minority not the majority that finally saw the light long after others tried dragging them into it.

These people I likened to a mob wore clean clothes, slacks, and ties though didn’t turn violent the one voice of Newsome guiding them like dodo’s to extinction or lemmings over a cliff reminds me of some one else and their famous poem before he died in World War II.

It was about speaking up but since he didn’t when the German’s in that war came for him no one was there to speak on his behalf.

Anyone know of whom I speak?

It looks like working poor individuals, houseless and mentally ill are being set up as new/old targets of opportunity.

Remember Coalition on Homeless worker Mr. Willie Warren, a big robust man was attacked by two or three men last year for being a homeless advocate being black was just a bonus.

Are these modern day brown shirted thugs believing in Newsom’s plan?

They may be in the minority but Man! if that’s a taste of what’s to come I dread this guy as mayor or any higher office he aspires too.

Folks we have an early heads up, find out everything we can about this guy and all is connections.

I might not have a veil like mama but "Damn, he make my sense twinge and its a bad feeling.

That’s all I’m going to say. Bye,

    Happy Happy, Sappy, Joy.

Travel may be in my future.

    by Joe B.

    A birthday’s coming up, mine.

Don’t want to celebrate it with calories, fat, icing, and ice cream or any sort of food except home cooked in one of two cities away from San Francisco.

Thought of mortality arriving and contingencies if not avoiding the inevitable being prepared to both let go and embrace Mr./Ms. Grim Reaper and the most high while hedging applied science will help in my return.

I’ll just be in bed with someone most of the night and some the next and maybe a few days after that.

I’ll be on the cusp of 50 feeling great doing my utmost to keep it that way.

My plan, go into a gym use it to workout whatever frustrations, problems, errors making the body a fortress of solid lean muscle and nerves.

Other friends have gone through horrific scenes and survival meant temporary loss of dignity because survival’s what most important at the moment not dignity in death.

Thinking back a few years I sardonically laugh at my pointless half hearing gripes, blaming others for inner turmoil created within my psyche.

I’ve jokingly say I only want three things in life.
    1) Immortality
    2) Time Travel
    3) Parallel World Travel or "Sliding" as in TV Science Fiction show.

Not much only three things in life.

Immortality for me has to be first because with this I’ll have no time for learning the science and technologies to achieve the rest.

I must write a list of goals achieved and yet to be accomplished.

Nearly dying of double pneumonia twice a few years ago made a coward out of me, this was before being mugged by two guys after that I seemed to slowly regain my regular self though it took time I believe that’s why my room became such a mess; there are still unresolved issues.

There are times where fear of rain, cold, or misty fog the kind that seeps into your bones kept me in my apartment for weeks at a time.

I knew I was really ok when I actively sought one of guys who mugged me and when I saw him I went up to him, looked into his eyes, "What Are You Looking At?"

    "Nothing."

Then I left slowly keeping my eyes on him until I’m at my apartment.

"I want to kill him with a palm to bridge of his nose which would send bits of bone and cartilage into his brain instantly but it came to me, he wasn’t worth killing, going to jail for.

$60 dollars was stolen from me by the two thieves but the money was quickly spent they stole from someone on General Assistance not from a Nob Hill, limo riding owner of a trendy restaurant, dance club/bar so they’d have to do again and sooner or later they’d rob the wrong person and get knifed or shot for their attempts.

I have to prepare for travel abroad and don’t know how long gone I’ll be but it could be a few years before returning between 2010 or ’11.

Some people have done this at younger ages and its second nature when they travel to older folks like myself it is a big deal, being older only makes it more poignant than younger people because of relatively less time we older folks supposedly have.

I’ve thought of lots of place America to visit especially where you college, university females would be when half soused and in aggressive amorous mood.

Then I thought "nah, I really want to go overseas to learn all kinds or things without distractions America would have.

I’d like to return from my extended travel if not a different person but slightly better than I left and be more of an adventurer. [Wait, isn’t using cryonics trying to trick or beat death the ultimate risk taking adventure second to doing it while one is still alive?

To all those lovely women 45 or some young as 24 thank you.

You’ve made e-dating less of a problem and one more option.

I hope to meet a few of you before taking that long trip abroad – I might meet some of you on my journeys.

You have my web site if not it’ll be shown at the end of the column. Bye….

The implementation of the dangerous new Proposition N (Care-Less Use of Cash) in San Francisco

by Clive Whistle, Ace Tafoya and Tiny/PoorNewsNetwork

    The War on the Poor

    is in full EFF-ECT!

    From Frisco and Oakland

    To The Phillipines and Iraq

But now there’s a new form of house to House

    Com-bat

Yes, I said the War on the Poor

    Is in Full EFF-ECT

This time the "soldiers" are police, social workers and Politi-SHunS

    Comin’ to Col-LecT…

…..an excerpt from The War on the Poor by Tiny/Po’ Poets Project

"This isn’t official yet but you people need to know what’s coming…" One of the case managers at my shelter stood at the front of our over-stuffed line of nervous poor folk – it was 9:00 am and we were about to be shoved out of the shelter for our collective days of wandering, food gathering and/or job hunting depending on our respective abilities or more important our Dis-abilities…

You see, ever since the voters of San Francisco voted in Prop N (Care Not CasH) ie the voters of SF went for rich-white-boy-Newsomes campaign lies about "helping homeless San Franciscans" when he really meant ; Help me get elected as mayor on the backs of homeless people, Prop N has been racing toward a July 1st implementation date, in other words ASAP…

"Once it is implemented – it will mean that people who are not currently receiving CAAP (welfare) will not be able to stay in the shelters cause the beds will be reserved for CAAP recipients. That means people on SSI, .. and any of the seniors will need to be transferred to State funded homes for the elderly" What?, I screamed inwardly first for my own disabled vet self and then for my two elderly friends in the shelter… why don’t they just put us all in jail right now and get it over with…..

" Senor..senor – what about me – what about people who are just working but don’t have enough to afford rent in this town?

"Yea brother, what about us working poor folks?" Two men from the line, one an immigrant from Mexico, one a refugee from eviction in The Fillmore asked the case manager…

"No you two will not be given beds over the GA/CAAP residents – of course, if there are beds left over then hey – sure you can – but they will be given first priority.." Yea, I thought and the fact there are over 12,000 homeless folks in SF, and only 1,350 beds in all of San Francisco for single adults, over 2900 homeless CAAP recipients – not to mention that over 20% of the houseless are seniors 40% are disabled vets like me %25-40 disabled, 13% immigrants and 15% working poor – yea we’ll get a bed alright – in the county jail.

"Your button should say, "I’m scared " because obviously you are scared of the homeless and trying to get rid of homeless people" I thought about the Prop N implementation meeting that occurred last week – fellow POOR Magazine reporter, Ace Tafoya, started by addressing the Gavin Newsome supporters that filled the room all wearing a hypocritical button "I Care" on their lapels.

Ace went on to address the other frightening aspect of Prop N, " why is DHS’ planning to install Bio-metric imaging machines into shelters. This will frighten people, immigrants, people with mental health issues and even veterans. They might think they are being arrested and may not want to seek help. We strongly urge you to use this type of money on other services we really need"

The meeting at City Hall like this shelter line was filled with several hundred people
( mostly of color) who would be affected by this new form of racial and economic cleansing – at the end of the meeting I could only cry – cry for all the poor in San Francisco, cry for all the Gavin pawns that thought they were doing the "right thing" (including some important black folk like Mother Brown of Bayview) and cry for all the babies and mamas in Iraq who like the poor in SF are just being wiped out cause someone else with more power, more money and more connections is in control..

  • C-Phone Dates Pt.2. It could be called Hidden Cell Phone Rules girls, women know about. Guess who dosen't?

    Arbitrary rules solidified into
mores always subject to change when
re-named "weaker" sex figures it out.

Old romance game sped up but not all
young boy's, women, men, or girl's will play.

    by Joe B.

Last time I was trying to dispel some myths about handsome and ugly guys, talking about cell phones as yet another emotion packed game most women experts at.

I don’t know the protocol of with c-phones.

Though I have it on good authority that its a psycho/emotional power play.

What I’ve observed is sketchy at best not having a cell phone of my own but have seen, how others use them.

One glaring observation, while walking on sidewalks, in cars, in café’s, or restaurants when these phones ring, beep, sing songs, buzz, or vibrate (except for vibrating ones) are disruptive especially at weddings, in movie-opera theaters or any venue where artistic or public endeavors where people gather as a community.

Some people walk slower crossing streets and unlike home where one can loudly speak without being overheard in the street one can get hit by a car.

I hear people talking loudly about supposedly private conversations.

My main discovery in people dating with cell phones in toe.

The cell phone can be used as ongoing commentary on how good/bad a date is going while women or young girls are on dates.

Most men are clueless at being no-second-date-guy.
I never assume a woman will have a second date with me but when it happens it’s a pleasant surprise.

Remember, I mentioned a psycho/emotional context, its confusing but here goes: as usual men and women give out their phone numbers if they like someone sometimes they give each other fake numbers to get rid of those they don’t really care to know at the moment.

    It all changes with C-phones.

In bars/dance clubs, or where ever people congregate it still holds true except women can control their love life by handing out their numbers to as many men as they can.

The reason, they give their number is so men become emotionally invested in calling
"We don’t ask, threaten, or force them to call, they just do, its not our fault they get emotional about it."

Yet, isn’t odd that if the men women gave their numbers to don’t call they at a predetermined time (girls/women) get angry at them not calling while describing those that do as "weak, lead by their "smaller heads."

The male sex loses both ways in this phone game condemned because they do want to hook up with women who may or may not necessarily want to date but collect numbers as part of an elaborate "How many can I string along game."

    Like the movie "War Games"

When the super computer says "Curious, the best way to win is not to play the game."

Men do learn not to play, loneliness may be a result for awhile but soon a few of the opposite sex also leaves the tired game.

Its like a stacked deck of cards women play with full of aces, kings, queens, ten’s, and deuces.

Men have all low losing cards.

But if men begin leaving the tables empty with women holding all these cards they turn into colorful useless jokers.

Men don’t have to play women’s games as women rarely play men’s men can do the same.

But there are always new players uninformed getting caught in the game they must be warned off earlier and earlier until the phone card game becomes less attractive to both player and played.

Now they may not be thinking that like that at the moment but it happens because men let it happen and woman say their blameless will keep stoking the fire keeping men like moths drawn to light.

All things being equal men do the same more bed partner’s to chose from too.

The Hook: Total control of the dating rules, a c-phone locks in that control even though women say "I’m not doing anything but give numbers to men."

Men feel they must call anyway its up to woman to pass or fail, deciding when or if they call. This is control.

And you wonder why I’m always get all the rejections out of the way so you can have the 1 or 2 yes’s that really see you as you are and is serious and not just play a bed-good by-females.

Women as usual are better at it because they use both left and right sides of hemisphere’s of the brain.

    1) Play it the way women have it now advantage their’s.

    2) Do the same as woman advantage to male’s.

    3) Go to same bars/clubs or where ever both sexes mix, see which women collect phone number’s then refuse playing any of the games.

What women and men really think of all the tricks of emotional in-jokes on evolving cell phone power plays? ….Bye

PS, more to come in Pt. 3.

The People protest the FCC vote at Clear Channel owned radio station KMEL. The FCC doesn't listen

    by TJ Johnston/PoorNewsNetwork Community Journalist

Outside radio station KMEL in San Francisco on May 29, some 200 media activists (including several POOR Magazine (PNN) reporters and supporters) gave a shout out. The station, owned by Clear Channel, couldn’t help but hear us. Apparently, they turned down the volume in anticipation of the Federal Communications Commission’s 3-2 vote in favor of more media deregulation which happened on June 2.

On the eve of the FCC decision allowing the expansion of media empires, a coalition featuring Media Alliance, Global Exchange, The SF Bayview, Code Pink, the Youth Media Council and others jammed on stage to keep the airwaves free. The action was a reminder that KMEL should still be "the people’s station."

Bay View staff writer JR and Straight Outta Hunter’s Point filmmaker Kevin Epps drew a cinematic analogy for the Texas-based conglomerate: "(Clear Channel) is the Matrix plugging into people’s minds."

In case you’ve just joined us, Clear Channel is already the world’s largest radio broadcaster, concert promoter and billboard firm. It is also a symptom and symbol of what’s wrong when six companies own 80% of the stations we hear. Since the Telecommunications Act passed in 1996, their 40 stations ballooned to over 1200. In the Bay Area alone, they own nine stations and run several performance venues. If the FCC votes to further relax media ownership rules, this corporate beast will swell to Hulking proportions.

Clear Channel’s checkered past has invited public scrutiny. Here’s a short list of their misdeeds:
    1) They fired KMEL’s community affairs director Davey D for interviewing antiwar Congresswoman Barbara Lee. In general, KMEL’s service to the urban community diminished under Clear Channel ownership.
    2) Their infamous musical blacklist banned about 150 songs. According to a leaked memo, John Lennon’s "Imagine" and Cat Stevens’ "Peace Train" are banished from their frequencies. Just recently, innocuous country combo the Dixie Chicks got removed from their playlists for speaking against George W. Bush.
    3) Their sponsorship of prowar rallies is only the latest example of their corporate editorial slant. President Glen Beck has little patience for dissent. In a Memorial Day address, he proclaimed, "If you five me any crap, (the police) are taking you down!"
    4) Public service has been compromised. After a toxic spill in a North Dakota town, authorities called all the stations in that town to broadcast the emergency. Unsurprisingly, no one answered the phone at the Clear Channel owned outlets----most of the workforce was laid off after they were purchased.
    5) Programming has become homogenized. Voicetracking, the practice of recording one voice for numerous markets, has become the norm. And did you ever notice the repetition of the same songs?

Our afternoon’s festivities were led by the lovely and talented Andrea Buffa of Global Exchange and United for Peace & Justice. Our hostess with the mostest led us through chants of "Whose airwaves? Our airwaves!" and "Monopolies don’t speak for me. Protect the airwaves, FCC!"

The Brass Liberation Orchestra provided musical interludes. The 12-piece outfit played Bob Marley’s "Get Up, Stand Up" and "Fala Kute." A band member said their gig reflects their belief in community music and radio.

Adorned in Code Pink, Global Exchange founder Medea Benjamin explained why the US is isolated from the world community: "It’s the media, stupid!" (I would point out it’s our stupid media). Citing the Dixie Chicks backlash, Benjamin declared the US media to be the most undemocratic in the world. Despite this adversity, she announced that so far the FCC website has had 428,000 comments posted, 98% of which opposed further conglomeration. Chairman Michael Powell, listen up! Benjamin closed her set by leading us into singing a John Lennon song. Care to guess which one?

A bit of vaudeville was performed as a performer dressed as Clear Channel CEO Larry Mays thanked us for our support (yeah, right) and gave a huge check to the FCC. "Just fill in the amount ," he said. As the rally closed, I passed a sign reading "No McRadio." In the wake of the FCC vote, a healthy media diet provided by independent media outlets like The SF Bay View and PoorNewsNetwork is more essential than ever .

The New 'SARS' Quarantine proposed by Bush/Cheney Inc.- An Opinion Editorial

    by Dee

President George Bush just put SARS on the list of diseases that can be quarantined.

Doctors say SARS is a variant of the flu that has killed people in the past all over the world. In other
words, not really a lot different from what is a known illness. The flu was never placed on a quarantine list.

When AIDS and HIV first appeared there was talk of quarantine but Act Up and others actively made sure that
    didn't happen.

If an airline passenger shows symptoms of SARS they can now be detained against their will; in other words, forced
treatment. Can illegals also be detained and deported by this quarantine?

Is this quarantine another insane step in the homeland security to limit our civil rights - forced medical treatment?

SARS should not be put on a quarantine list.

In my opinion, it is just another factor, like small pox inoculations, to get around current patient protections from
government forced medical treatment and as a way to interfere with our civil rights.
