The Worst Ambulance Trip Ever

I asked my wife Kathy Galves, “What happened when King Ambulance took me away?” This is her response:

"When the ambulance attendant asked Bruce what hospital did he want to go to, he said "Saint Francis."

Before they took Bruce away, they asked me, "Were you coming with him?"

I said, "No, but I'll meet you at Saint Francis." As I was getting ready I looked out the window several times. The ambulance was still sitting there. I released my service dog Betty from the bathroom, where I had put her for the attendants’ safety. She is very protective toward her tribe.

I looked out the window again, and they had been sitting there for at least 45 minutes. I was done getting ready, so I was looking to catch a ride to Saint Francis with the ambulance. But then they left.

I called a Green Cab. It arrived in about 10 minutes. We went to Saint Francis. From the time I called the cab to when we arrived at Saint Francis it took about 30 minutes.

I went to Emergency, and they said that they had not been contacted nor had they seen any ambulance from King American Ambulance Company. That's when I got pissed.

"Where the hell did they take my husband?" I thought I was in the middle of a real live Science Fiction Horror movie. Except it wasn't a movie. I went out and found a San Francisco Fire Department Rescue Ambulance that was sitting out front.

"Excuse me, can you help me?" I said.

“King Ambulance?” they said, "Oh no! King Ambulance is a private company and the City has no control over them."

As stated above, King Ambulance had never appeared.

I said, "King Ambulance took my husband away, supposedly to Saint Francis Hospital, but he never arrived. Where would they have taken him when they were directed to take him to Saint Francis Hospital? I was never notified that they were taking him someplace else."

They said, "The only reason he would have been taken someplace else is if the patient was suffering a heart attack in route." They told me to call King Ambulance. I did, and King Ambulance said he was taken to a UC Hospital, and they didn't know which UC Hospital campus.

A good Samaritan recommended I go talk to CVS Pharmacy-- they would be able to direct me to the correct location they took Bruce. I did, and they did. Bruce was taken to UC Parnassus Campus.

When I located Bruce he was laying on a gurney in an inner hallway in the Emergency wing at UC. I arrived at about 5:00 pm.

Jazzie Collins was the First Community Reparation Chairperson and also Co-chairperson of LGBT Elder Taskforce. As an AIDS patient she had to be very careful about her health. One day she was very sick. So she picked up the phone to call an ambulance to go to Kaiser Hospital.

The late Ms. Collins was very proud of her Transgender situation. King Ambulance was very homophobic and Transphobic. When Jazzie asked to be taken to Kaiser Hospital they told her it was psychosomatic.

Jazzie said, "If you don't take me to Kaiser Hospital I will sue you.” She knew they were in violation of a law, which she quoted instinctively from the State Hospital Code.

Bruce's version of what happened that day.

As I was at home, I was in pain and I felt like an alien was going to be born out of my stomach, like the Mel Brooks movie Spaceballs. I asked my wife to call Saint Francis immediately. She did, and this is what she told me they said.

We called 911, and that’s when the fun begins. The ambulance asked me what day it was, and I gave them April 28, 1951. This was my birthday. I was off from the real date by 63 years. I told them about my pain. They checked my vitals, and found out that my blood pressure was 180 over 90. My usual blood pressure is 110 over 60. I was in so much pain.

An attendant said I was a wimp and that was why I wanted to go to the hospital. That's when I bit his head off. On the way, they said there was no room at Saint Francis.

They asked, “Do you want me to tell your girlfriend?" She is my African Descendent Wife and I am Caucasian.

Arrived at UCSF Parnassus at 4:00 pm. Placed on a gurney at 4:00 and was placed in a room on a hospital bed. I waited until midnight to be seen by a doctor. Then they took me in my hospital bed down the hallway for a CAT scan. Then the doctor diagnosed Pancreatitis, so they got my bed ready.

In comes this Black woman (about 300 lbs.). She said, "I am looking for this dead man by the name of Bruce Allison.”

I said, "I'm Bruce Allison, and rumors of my death have been widely exaggerated."  The same woman broke up in a laugh. It looked like that laugh was the biggest laugh she had in her entire life. She took me to the 5th floor. I will write more about my experience in other articles.

This is a recommendation to the powers that be: Federal, State or City. An ad hoc committee should be established to investigate ambulances. Not only professionals should be on the committee, but laymen that have used these services, better known as consumers. Licensing requirements should be tightened and given teeth. Fines should be applied so that these companies cannot use barbaric practices for capitalistic gains. I will start with my own Supervisor, Jane Kim, and my own Assemblyman, Tom Ammiano, or his replacement.

This is Bad News Bruce Signing Out.

Like a Beautiful Star and Other Poems From Behind the Razor Wires

Phoenix

Like a beautiful star viewed from a distance, obscured by the light years that separate the world from her brilliance and her from their ignorance Beautifully encrypted with a celestial image all eyes at attention yet no one gets it, it's a lonesome existence so she bottles her light inside. White zinfandel bottles that provide a place for her  pain to hide. More than once in a while opening her "wine" eagle spread on any bed she finds rest from the rocky hills she climbs. Climatiz  cries tears from her "I" not mere tears but spirit drops that metamorph into bright embers warm enough to spark life but too hot to sustain the enigma of her aspirations not mere tears but latent promises that evaporated on hotel pillow cases leaving traces of her yearning soul remnants of her internal erosion seeping through as the bottle she hid in bursts open leaving exposed what she fought so hard to keep closed she implodes and from the ashes of implosion she's born brand new. Like A Phoenix.

Impervious

God Blessed this skin of mine it wasn't made for cameos on commercials for oil of olay this skins rough the Bastard child of tempered steel and alligator hide the canvas where suffering chose to sketch its greatest mural its life time achievement colored with blood dabbed from lacerations.

God tests this skin of mine skin blanketed in leopard printed bruises that blossom on my epidermis like violet and blue pansies witnesses to their attempt to hex what God Blessed. So, God touched this skin of mines endowing every cell with strength, beauty, and resilience to endure each strike, every blow and when the darts pierced too deep God healed this skin of mine from black and blue speckled symbols of rejection and hate rolling off the tips of unbridled fire threatening to destroy what God gave. Beautiful, Bronze, Brilliance this skin that God made.

Impervious!

Cause God Loves this skin of mine.

Virtue

If beauty had a first name, it would have to be Nneka for what could be more beautiful than a mother whose love is so supreme it destroys all elements that threaten the growth of her child? If purity had a face, it would be like one of a new born for what could be more pure than new life sent to awaken slumbering dreams and aspirations while endowing us with the audacity to hope in a despondent world? If power had a pair of feet one would certainly be connected to the ankle of the strong-willed sista who juggles two jobs, school, and motherhood, all the while never stopping to complain about having to fill a void that shouldn't be there while the other foot would undoubtedly be caught up in the stride of a determined brother who denying any association with the proverbial "Box" they try to limit him to, cuts through circumstance like the light of a lone star through an impenetrable dark. If patience had limbs they'd be attached to torsos that envelope hearts that reach through hands that heal but will just as soon slap the stupid out of you when need be and if love could be born anywhere at all, the flirtatious grin shared between life - long companions would be its MECCA. Sprouting life nurtured within a pair of new eyes, discovering new hands that grasp not for the wind but for Gods promise open arms that embrace, not hate but the love that molded them and an emboldened tongue that speaks, not to curse, but to impart Gods Blessing.

Hipster M.D.

Somebody please help me hipsters have taken over my doctor’s office! Back in August of this year I got a letter from my medical practitioner stating that she had been laid off as the result of an executive decision. This troubled me greatly because she had been my personal care provider for many years very close to ten in fact. This decision of course did not take in consideration the impact this would have on individual patients, and certainly not her!

Over the years I discussed many issues with her many of them life changing events and many of them were what some people might consider trivial but I say it’s the little things in life that matter the most sometimes.

Point being if the little things add up, without getting them off ones chest by the time something big comes up it may already be past the breaking point. She was there for me when my blood sugar was near stroke or heart attack level and when my mom passed away.
She was there to hear me sound off about love lost and many other key issues in my life in short she became a valued confidant and as far as I’m concerned like family.

Getting back to the hipster issue however, recently while checking in with my near personal care provider because my blood sugar was at an alarming level I was given the usual talk of how this is way too high, asked questions about my eating habits and given advice.
The vast majority of this was from an in house pharmacist rather than my doctor, who I kid you not took less time talking to me than triage initially took.

The breaking point of this little talk with the pharmacist came when he tried to prescribe me drugs that I most definitely do not wish to take under any circumstances and when he said marijuana is a central nervous system depressant, ha !

The thing that amazes me and should anybody with a functioning brain is that so called “folk medicine” is referred to as “alternative” medicine as opposed to the manmade chemicals that have only been in use a mere 100 years if that.

He finely brow beat and badgered me into taking a higher dose of one drug for diabetes and adding an additional one. Somebody please save me from these hipsters who’s every other word is “cool”!

Veteran's Day 2014

On Tuesday November 11, 2014 because I was broke and didn’t feel like standing in line at a soup kitchen I decided to take advantage of the fact that I am a US Military Veteran [US Navy 1983-1987]. Many businesses offered free or discounted goods and services on this day most of them large chain operations. My biggest regret is that I didn’t get up earlier or otherwise plan my activities for that day otherwise I would have got a lot more swag and had a lot more to brag about. I started the day with a cup of coffee from Starbucks [even though officially I am boycotting that chain for its ongoing support of the Zionist state of Israel and its inhumane and genocidal attacks on the Palestinian people and ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory].

The young lady who served me seemed a bit bewildered and I’m not sure if she secretly held the same or similar feelings I currently do for the U.S. Government, if she knew what my feelings were, if she just felt like I was a no good bum looking for a handout, or if she knew she wasn’t getting a tip or all of the above but at any rate I enjoyed my not so guilty pleasure of enjoying premium coffee for free! Next I got on the bus and enjoyed another free cup of Starbucks coffee on Fisherman’s Wharf and acquired a bottle of their [ I’m sure overpriced ] bottled water that another patron left behind. Clerk 2 also seemed a bit bewildered and I’m not sure if it was for the aforementioned reasons or if due to her being from another nation and didn’t get my accent because honestly even I know it varies at times. Next I went to IHOP on Fisherman’s Wharf Where there was no bewilderment, service was a little slow but cheerful due to the place being packed and enjoyed a free stack of their “Red, White and Blue” pancakes.

While waiting at the counter I enjoyed a little conversation with a fellow Navy Vet. Who served in Vietnam as an officer. He suggested I go to Chili’s which I did where I enjoyed a steak dinner also free! I decided on Chili’s next because I figured I would need some protein after all those carbs before I hit Denny’s for a “Build your own Grand Slam Breakfast” which I missed due to it only being served from 5a.m. to noon and after circling the wharf several times looking  for Denny’s [which I found out today is in Holiday Inn, weird the same week Big Bank Hank from the Sugarhill Gang passed. The year their hit “Rappers delight” came out I was still in high school and I started getting in touch with many of my old high school chums this week also eeire !] I even was apparently told bad information by a clerk in one of the local hotels not sure again why but I did.

I made my way too the Maritime Museum to use the rest room where I inadvertently discovered the senior center which I may or may not join and somehow wound up with a free lunch there also. I got on the bus two of them actually and headed to Mission Street where I knew there was a Denny’s, and hit 2 more Starbucks the very last one gave me a very large cup and actually thanked me for my service which none of the others did ! By the time I got to Denny’s it was 2 pm so I missed their swag. I’m generally not accustomed to telling major chains especially those that have had racist incidences in their past to update their addresses on line but when it comes to free stuff yo' dude update your address ! To top the night off I got a free ticket to see Brad Pitt’s WW2 war movie Fury. All in All it was a great movie and as most “historical “ movies it embellished on the truth some because I know America’s military at that time was more segregated than Hitler’s but as Brad Pitt’s character “War Daddy” put it “ Idealism is peaceful history is violent !”

My thoughts on The Human Genome Project

According to my personal study of medical research that has caused me trauma made me write and study the mind. I read an article about the human genome it stated that "On June 26, 2000, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium announced the production of a rough draft of the human genome sequence. In April, 2003, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium is announcing an essentially finished version of the human genome sequence." Basically they are trying to clone people in the name of cell research.

The Genome Project is dealing with the brain and how it functions for different people to studying how certain genes run through families. This version, which is available to the public, provides nearly all the information needed to do research using the whole genome. Just for the people who do not know what a genome is it is a scientific word describing genes and the way the mind works. Poor people are victimized in the name of health research and discovering genes.

The difference between the draft and finished versions is defined by coverage, the number of gaps and the error rate. The draft sequence covered 90 percent of the genome at an error rate of one in 1,000 base pairs, but there were more than 150,000 gaps and only 28 percent of the genome had reached the finished standard. In the April 2003 version, there are less than 400 gaps and 99 percent of the genome is finished with an accuracy rate of less than one error every 10,000 base pairs. The differences between the two versions of the genome are significant for scientists using the sequence to conduct research. During these years of practice I thought about how they may be able to go in and pick the brain cells that cause mental health issues, cancer issues, autism etc.

When the genome study started it became extremely popular, because everybody wants to be healthy and if we can negate certain genes out of our body to keep certain discrepreicnes away then I am for it. But sometimes people have the wrong intent and will offer money to test people like guinea pigs. I thought about the incident that happened in the sixties during the civil rights movement when they gave people what they consider an STD these days. Or how scientists make up diseases and give the medicine to people for what they made. Aids is another example because a lot of people say it came from Africa, from my personal research it is proclaimed to be a man made disease that killed billions of people. I just wanted to  write about the genome project, because I thought about mental illness and if they can actually stop it from running in a family. My illness is genetic just like diabetes and I think it is important for people to take into consideration to further their knowledge on testing vaccinations and everything attached. Its scary now in America because sometimes diseases become epidemics, but the genome project is research that will hopefully be a positive thing.

Shutting Down the OPD

By Kimo/PNN-RYME Youth Skola, 11years old

I was yelling my voice out. My voice hurt. My head hurt .I lost my voice while saying, “I don't see no riot here, why are you in riot gear?”

I saw a man up on the flagpole and people chaining themselves to the door of the Oakland Police Department . I couldn't believe how some of the cops were smiling about what happened to Micheal Brown,Eric garner,Trayvon Martin,Alan Blueford.

While I was screaming my voice out I heard other people screaming their voices out too and I thought to my self how all of these 100reds of people had to scream to make the world know that so many innocent lives were took-en.

It was hard to think about it, but I felt like I wanted to punch the cops lined up in front of us, but i knew i couldn't. So I kept on using my voice. My voice was dying but I kept on going for all the peoples, for all the lives that were too-ken by the pigs for no reason.

 The Oakland Police Department Shutdown

December 15th, 2014  the Oakland police department (OPD)shutdown for four hours and twenty minutes.
The people who organized it, were from multiple different anti-police-brutality groups like
black out collective and others, They chained themselves to the door of the OPD head quarters at seven in the morning and stayed until eleven twenty when some cops brought in the tactical reinforcement unit and cut through the hard cover of the plastic protecting the chains.

While there, I witnessed  a t least a hundred or more people  protesting, shouting chants, and giving out doughnuts.
It surprised me how many people chained themselves  and were willing to get arrested for the cause. Me and several other students from decolonize academy joined in about an hour in.

“INDITE, CONVICT, SEND THOSE KILLA COPS TO JAIL! THE WHOLE DAMN SYSTEM, IS GUILTY AS HELL” shouts the crowd,  as they stare the line of cops straight in the eyes.

The feeling of being there, protesting it just gives you that specific rush that you can only get from protests.

The sound resonated off the pavement like drums in perfect harmony. Boom! boom! The protest was coming. And it was huge.

As I looked up to the sky, I saw police helicopters and big droplets of rain coming toward my face . When I look to my left I see people like me. People who want justice. But the Oakland Police Department were looking like they wanted to stop us from having and getting justice.

It was December 15th and there were about 3 dozen or more people in the protests supporting the shut down the police department of Oakland,California. We were rallying in front of the OPD because we successfully shut their station down and changed their flag to ours. A flag of all the boys murdered by the police.

“Shut it down for Micheal Brown! ” the protesters chanted finally as we walked away.
