p Who is considered a great scholar? How is scholarship attained? How is greatnessnbsp;honored? And from what barometer do we assess this canon?/p p At POOR Magazine we have a very different notion of scholarship, who deserves it, hownbsp;it is attained and how it is used. We have established a new kind of scholarship, Thenbsp;Scholarship of Poverty. This scholarship has a new canon with new designations fornbsp;greatness. Survival itself, through extreme poverty and crisis, span data-scayt_word="houselessness" data-scaytid="1"houselessness/span, racism, nbsp;disability and welfare to name a few are what you need to qualify for poverty scholarship.nbsp;Conversely, a person who is formally educated with a Masters Degree and no povertynbsp;scholarship would be considered inexperienced and therefore should not be writing, nbsp;lecturing or legislating on issues that impact communities in poverty./p p The formally understood ldquo;signsrdquo; of scholarship such as writing, researching, critiquingnbsp;publishing, require an inherent privilege These signs afford people an ability to benbsp;integrated, heard and recognized. As span data-scayt_word="Trin" data-scaytid="3"Trin/span Min Ha writes, Writing, reading, thinkingnbsp;imagining speculating. These are luxury activities, so I am reminded, permitted to anbsp;privileged few whose idle hours of the day can be viewed otherwise than as a bowl ofnbsp;rice or a loaf bread less to share with the span data-scayt_word="family.”" data-scaytid="2"family.rdquo;/span/p p This was my truth, my struggle; I was a homeless child who had to drop out of school innbsp;the sixth grade to support my family. I did not have the time away from earning a loaf ofnbsp;bread, I did not have the paper, I did not have a computer, and more importantly I did notnbsp;even have the privilege of an organized life, as so many other people struggling withnbsp;homelessness, poverty, disability, racism etc. therefore these are the people who arenbsp;inherently denied a voice in the media, in the creation of legislation and academic scholarship. In San Francisco now and then you hear about homicides, but these past weeks in the Mission three different homicides have occurred, and no one knows why. The truth is, itrsquo;s becoming scary to walk the streets at night. No one knows where the people who are looking to harm and terrorize you are./p p Itrsquo;s hard to hear about this violence, coming from a violent country like Guatemala. I lived, scared, in Guatemala. I would go out in the streets only by necessity. I witnessed how people would rob others on the bus, and you would need to keep your mouth shut, cause otherwise you could get robbed too./p p One day I was walking on the street. I was coming out of church, and went to a radio station where you can send shout-outs to your family. After this I started to walk towards my job. I walked a block, and suddenly two men grabbed me and took the little money I had on me; they threatened me with some scissors and a knife to my neck. I cried a lot that day cause I did not have money for the bus to get to my job, and by walking I would never get there on time./p p I had no choice than to beg. Thatrsquo;s why I came to San Francisco. I felt more tranquil and secure here, there were less robberies and homicides, and I could walk the streets without fear./p p But now am scared again by the violence that is happening in California and the violence that is running some of the cities./p p Sometimes it saddens me to know that innocent people die, just like the guy who was killed in Oakland after changing his pay check of three hundred dollars. They unjustly killed him and he left his sons and family behind in this country./p

John was calling me from a pay phone in Skid row of Los Angeles, he and many of my fellow poverty and indigenous scholars who are currently residing in the cardboard hotels across span data-scayt_word="Amerikkka" data-scaytid="4"Amerikkka/span don#39;t have span data-scayt_word="cel" data-scaytid="5"cel/span phones, nor do they have lap-tops, or i-pads, or propane stoves which seem to be the norm for participants of most of the actions across the US./p p We saw them coming shouting this is what democracy looks likenbsp; so span data-scayt_word="alot" data-scaytid="6"alot/span of us span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="8"houseless/span folks who have been down here for years joined in but then after awhile it was kind of like we weren#39;t really wanted there in their occupation, John concluded./p p As I witness the power of the resistance over the last three weeks of all of thenbsp; Occupations (wrongly named cause these are occupied, stolen lands already) across the nation, my heart is warmed that people are finally standing up to bank theft and government theft, and yet i have heard and seen span data-scayt_word="alot" data-scaytid="7"alot/span of the same race and class divides play out that seem to play out everywhere in the US. In the intended lack of organization there is a default leadership that is mostly male, mostly white and/or mostly privileged, and isn#39;t clearly speaking of the already occupied, stolen indigenous lands that they are marching on and the deep struggle that all of us fighting span data-scayt_word="criminalization" data-scaytid="10"criminalization/span, span data-scayt_word="po'Lice" data-scaytid="11"po#39;Lice/span span data-scayt_word="harrassment" data-scaytid="12"harrassment/span, border fascism, span data-scayt_word="houselessness" data-scaytid="13"houselessness/span and span data-scayt_word="po'lice" data-scaytid="14"po#39;lice/span terror have already been dealt with for years./p p I know that i can go and speak in the general assembly about this - but, sadly like NYC span data-scayt_word="PNN" data-scaytid="16"PNN/span correspondent, Maria Lourdes and many of my fellow poverty, migrant and indigenous span data-scayt_word="skolaz" data-scaytid="17"skolaz/span at POOR Magazine, i can#39;t represent at the actions very much. span data-scayt_word="i've" data-scaytid="18"i#39;ve/span got three under the table hustles just to keep the very poor POOR magazine and my family ok. It is why we at POOR Magazine talk about the privilege of activism, media and art itself and why some people get heard and many people get silenced. It is why POOR Magazine#39;s span data-scayt_word="PeopleSkool" data-scaytid="19"PeopleSkool/span provides education, facilitation, BART fares, stipends for articles and direct emergency advocacy so thatnbsp; poor peoples in struggle can even work on organizing and create media./p p I amnbsp; very sad that protestors got their things seized the other night in SF, but i am constantly sad, shocked, depressed and overwhelmed when thousands of us poor folks who sleep, stand, sit, span data-scayt_word="covene" data-scaytid="20"covene/span or work on the street while poor/black or brown have been having our belongings confiscated for years without anyone caring or any mention on Democracy Now./p p My intent is not to splinter these powerful acts of resistance, but rather to help vision them as truly inclusive and revolutionary spaces for all peoples. If they are mostly white or privileged peoples acting and resisting, great. cause then maybe span data-scayt_word="po'lice" data-scaytid="15"po#39;lice/span abuses will finally get noticed, abuses of span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="9"houseless/span peoples will finally be seen, racism and apartheid can truly be recognized and acted on./p p So my hope is that the folks who do have the space, time or ability in their lives to show up and put their bodies in these acts of resistance, will truly understand that these lands are already occupied and have been occupied for hundreds of years as indigenous stolen land and that so many peoples struggling with deep poverty and racism are already there on the streets, right next to you./p

p bPNN-TV coverage of the Town Hall/b/p piframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/86nMCG8rDQA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen/iframe/p p Mama came out of the Fox Plaza post office in San Francisco with that look. You know the one, the- I#39;m going to get that MF who did me wrong, no matter what it takes- look.nbsp; Before I could ask what happened, she said with her deepest warrior wobyn tone, Get the number for the postmaster- someone#39;s got to speak back to this racist Sh@@#*t/p p When mama and me were houseless throughout my childhood into young adulthood, which was alot of our time in SF and Oakland, nbsp; i was made keenly aware of the ways poor people of color in AMerikkka were racialized and profiled for being poor and/or a person of color. It happened while shopping, while walking, while driving, while living. And it happened to me and my mama more times than i would care to remember. It never happened at the General delivery post office in the tenderloin. It did happen in Fox Plaza station four blocks away./p p There is a proposal to close this post office andnbsp; build out the Fox Plaza post office to accomadate the customers from this (Tenderloin) station, Acting general manager from the tenderloin post office spoke to at least 75 people who showed up for a town hall on the closure of the tenderloin post office which is the only San Francisco post office that offers general delivery service for over 1000 houseless people in San Francisco./p p When i got the call about the proposed closure of thenbsp; Tenderloin, Bayview and Visitation Valley post offices from a local activist David Welsh, i was completely thrown. We as poor peoples, landless peoples, disabled peoples, youth of color and elders already feel the hate of society on the daily through racist and classist profiling and exclusion, but moves like these are like a collective slap in the face. The message was clear, we weren#39;t important, we didnt matter. Landless, disabled, elders, poor peoples of color, Afrikan peoples, houseless peoples did not matter. On the contrary, stations that serve mostly white, middle class folks like the post office on Pine Street are never even mentioned. Is it just me or is the apartheid blatant?./p p We are keeping track of all of the comments in this meeting, nothing is confirmed yet, you will all have a chance to weigh in again.nbsp; One of the three oddly CIA-ish post office representatives who showed up at the town hall declared as people became more and more agitated in the meeting./p p The proposed closures is a direct attack on poor peoples of color, because they are trying to privatize the post officenbsp; like so much of government services. Jose Carlos from the postal workers union spoke to PNN We-Search Camp set up outside of the Tenderloin and Bay view stations after the notice went out to get the peoples version of this budget genocide lie, The union postal workers have been under attack for years, we are the only governnent office required to make bring in 5 billion a year, this is an attack on workers because we are a strong union and protected under a congressional law, which is why we are asking people to call their congress representatives and tell them how they feel, Jose concluded/p p There are roughly 12,000 seniors using this post office because they live in unsafe housing and can#39;t receive their mail at their residences, this will be a serious hardship on seniors, said poverty scholar and PNN reporter Bruce Allison/p p This is the communities life-line, when i was homeless it was the only way i got my GA check and letters from family, Vanessa Marks, life-long San Francisco resident said./p p I am 78 years old and can barely walk, if this post office closes, i will not be able to get my mail, Miss Landly, an African-American elder from the Bayview said about the closure of the Bayview post office branch../p p Oddly, in the flurry ofnbsp; powerful actions across the nations against wall street and banks, this life-line about to be destroyed, has seemed to get lost in the shuffle, the subtext seems to be, who needs snail mail, we are all on-line, we all use email, but do we?nbsp; and who is we? I guess its the same, hooked-up, e-connected, we that always seems to improperly speak for me and allnbsp; poor, landless, disabled, un-remembered, oppressed, peoples of color in Amerikkka./p p nbsp;/p

Why Must We Pay to Live on The Planet We Were Born On?

p nbsp;/p p/p p class="MsoNormal" On September 29, 2011, the Ecology Center in Berkeley, CA hosted a program organized by Transition Albany and Transition Berkeley, called Rebuilding Village Economy Through Local Exchange. The Transition groups are part of the larger Transition Movement, which began in the UK. The mission statement of Transition US is: Transition US is a resource and catalyst for building resilient communities across the United States that are able to withstand severe energy, climate or economic shocks while creating a better quality of life in the process. We will accomplish our mission by inspiring, encouraging, supporting, networking and training individuals and their communities as they consider, adopt, adapt, and implement the Transition approach to community empowerment and change./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" The primary purpose of the evening was to promote the usage of time banks as an alternative to monetary transactions. Mira Luna, a co-founder of the San Francisco Time Bank, talked about the workings of that institution and fielded many questions from the audience of around 35 people. But the evening began with me making a speech about why the economy CANNOT work for us all. I was actually the person who brought the idea of this speech to Transition Albany but the meeting#39;s purpose grew beyond my original plans. It is obvious that the Transition groups wanted to focus on ldquo;the practical side of reforming the economy and the Ecology Center#39;s publicity flyer added to that focus. But even in a planning teleconference for this event, someone mentioned that the last time they tried something like this, people did not really follow through with the steps they said they would take. I was not surprised. Even liberals think the system can be changed from within or reformed at the edges./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" The purpose of my speech was to tell those people NO. I do not believe that people who are calling for more job creation are barking up the ldquo;rightrdquo; tree. I also think that people do not follow through with projects in alternative economics because they don#39;t really understand the necessity for a revolution in thinking in order to make revolutionary alternatives truly take root./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" I am a span data-scayt_word="demonetarist" data-scaytid="13"demonetarist/span, a person who believes that monetary systems must be abolished. My ideas are by no means original. span data-scayt_word="Demonetarists" data-scaytid="14"Demonetarists/span exist throughout the world. They may not describe themselves with the word span data-scayt_word="“demonetarist" data-scaytid="15"ldquo;demonetarist/span,rdquo; opting instead for saying that they advocate altruism, or the gift economy, or the resource-based economy, or even local currencies. But they all see the current systems in use in the Western industrial world, and in nations that want to be like the West, as badly in need of replacement./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" In speaking about the economy, I ask, ldquo; Why must we pay to live on the planet we#39;re born on?rdquo; Again, this is not an original idea, but it is a question so seldom asked that it is the oratorical equivalent of throwing a brick through a windshield. When I raised that question in my speech, I saw a few heads bob affirmatively, but most other people looked like deer in the headlights. We are born into the money culture unless we are recent immigrants from an indigenous society that uses little or no Western-style money. We are so used to money that we may complain about not having enough, but say little if anything about its very existence. One of my purposes in making an economic speech is to make you question money#39;s existence today./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" The second major problem I called to the forefront was the problem of competition. I brought with mespan style=""nbsp; /spana photo from the front page of Sept. 27#39;s Oakland Tribune: President Obama addressing a business conference. The headline read: Create Jobs; Remain Competitive. A competitive job market is again a part of our existence that we never really think about. I spent a large part of my speech demonstrating how competition, by its very nature, creates losers as well as winners. No matter how hard people try or how skilled they are, or how honest the competition is, some people always lose. Personal responsibility, about which the right wing screams loudly when times get tough, cannot overcome the very nature of competition. Just think about sports. Whenever two teams play each other, one loses. You know that even before the game begins./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" I was limited to a half hour of speaking time, so I did not spend as much time as I would have wanted on how we get rid of this system on OUR TERMS. We know the system is collapsing but will we be the victims who see it fall down on our heads, or are we the engineers who ldquo;pullrdquo; an irreparable edifice down from the outside, we ourselves remaining safe from the falling debris? What do we build in its place and how do we get there from here? I dealt with those issues, but in a much too abbreviated way./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" I look forward to making other speeches on this subject, preferably in a setting in which I can run about an hour to cover everything I wanted to say but was not able to on September 29. So I am putting out the call for anyone reading this to find me a free place to speak. My husband and I are both ldquo;Poverty span data-scayt_word="Skolarz”" data-scaytid="16"Skolarzrdquo;/span at the moment. He has been out of work for 5 months, with no unemployment compensation, and all I do is occasional freelance journalism. At age 56, and not having worked in an office for over 10 years while I pursued journalism, I don#39;t think there is any room for me in the traditional job market anymore. If I make $200 in any given month it is a big deal. We will make November rent by skipping other payments and after that, who knows? Thus, I am in the unpalatable situation of needing to make money from a speech that advocates ending money. p Poverty, Race and the Occupation movements/p p By Tiny/p p class="MsoNormal" span style="font-family: Times New Roman Italic;"iI am occupied- I am occupied with bills I cant pay, rent I cant afford, jobs I cant get, children I cant feed, with span data-scayt_word="po’lice" data-scaytid="1"porsquo;lice/span officers who kill my young sons of color, with false borders I have no papers to cross over with, with landlords who are evicting me. I am occupied with ancestors who have been poisoned by corporate landfills and destroyed by corporate removal, with resting places that have been desecrated. /i/span/p p class="MsoNormal" span style="font-family: Times New Roman Italic;"iI am occupied with brothers and sisters killing themselves, with guns, drugs and poisons to forget their pain. I am occupied with elders in struggle who I canrsquo;t seem to console no matter how hard I try /i/span/p p class="MsoNormal" span style="font-family: Times New Roman Italic;"iI am occupied with fear and worry and sorrow and despair and I am occupied with how much I and my indigenous brothers and sisters and poor span data-scayt_word="mamaz" data-scaytid="2"mamaz/span and span data-scayt_word="daddys" data-scaytid="3"daddys/span are occupied everyday just to stay alive in span data-scayt_word="Amerikkka" data-scaytid="4"Amerikkka/span.. tiny 2011/i/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Four sets of human arms shot out of the revolving doors of Wells Fargo Bank in downtown San Francisco, while 6 bodies hugged the sides of the building. span data-scayt_word="Po’Lice" data-scaytid="5"Porsquo;Lice/span officers stood at confused attention while customers and downtown workers skirted the perimeter of the Foreclose on Wall Street Rally which included over 2000 people in span data-scayt_word="attendence" data-scaytid="6"attendence/span. Wells Fargo employees stood on the other side of the glass in a collective freeze frame. Every chant by the people sitting at the mouth of the bank was matched with hundreds of echoes repeated by the huge crowd in front of them./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Co-editor of POOR Magazine, Tony Robles and me, both the children of poor workers of color, who never even hadspan style=""nbsp; /spanenough money to apply, qualify or think of getting a mortgage, much-less any kind of a bank loan, stood there in witness, mouths agape. My mother always joked that our indigenous family was lucky to stay in the cardboard hotels when we traveled and were so poor and span data-scayt_word="herstorically" data-scaytid="7"herstorically/span landless that we would have to squat our burial place just to have somewhere to die.span style=""nbsp; /span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" And yet, the power of that moment, even if it wasnrsquo;t us or other always landless peoples they were speaking for, I know they were speaking truth to domination. Corporate, Racist, Exclusionary domination that is and has always oppressed so many poor peoples, indigenous peoples and communities of color since the beginning of the Other Occupation of all of the indigenous lands on Turtle Island that continues today./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" span style=""nbsp;/spanldquo;After today, I am taking all of my money out of Wells Fargo, rdquo; said Jessie, 81 an elder who stood quietly on the perimeter of the huge crowd with a sign that said simply I am the 99%./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" POOR Magazine was in the march on this day, sadly with only three members, we did have four family members but several of our poor parents are span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="8"houseless/span and jobless and so our fourth member had his phone cut off the night before and so we couldnrsquo;t find each other in the masses of people, and all of our other family members were working one of several jobs and hustles and so they didnrsquo;t even have the privilege to be there at all./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" At first I was taken by the almost flawless organizing by Bay Area non-profit organizations. From the emcee to the turn-out from group after group, the whole event was wound tightly as a rope on a drum.span style=""nbsp; /spanEach act of civil disobedience, set-off at the mouths of Wells Fargo bank branches, were beautifully orchestrated stages of span data-scayt_word="theatre" data-scaytid="9"theatre/span and action. It was obvious that funded organizations with time and paid staff had organized this event down to the last balloon, slightly like a party we at POOR Magazine had never received an invitation to./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" As we left the protest to get our young kids to school on time, Tony and I spoke about the power of the resistance that we had just been part of. I brought up how although I am excited and about all of the issues peoples were speaking and acting on I remain vexed by the fact that as poor peoples of color and indigenous peoples we are constantly in battle, in protest about the genocide and violence perpetrated on us and yet it is a struggle for us to get 50 people to show up for protests, so what is the difference? and what really is our role in all of these resistance ldquo;occupationsrdquo; as poor peoples of color in struggle who are also in struggle with the occupation of our time due to no-wage and low-wage work, system abuse and ongoing span data-scayt_word="criminalization" data-scaytid="11"criminalization/span and why do our resistance movements stay at the margins of what is important to show up for?/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" POOR Magazine had just helped postal workers organize a protest for the a href="http://www.poormagazine.org/node/4119"closure of three post offices/a that serve thousands of poor, disabled and span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="10"houseless/span elders of color in the span data-scayt_word="Bayview" data-scaytid="12"Bayview/span and the Tenderloin and four people showed up. Last month we and other groups organized a protest for a young woman in Oakland who was a href="http://www.poormagazine.org/node/4028"evicted out of public housing /abecause of government corruption and 10 people came and two nights ago, Homes Not Jails organized an event called World Homeless Day which included the squatting of 4000 vacant units kept vacant by landlords and span data-scayt_word="devil-opers" data-scaytid="13"devil-opers/span and if you didnrsquo;t look too closely there might have been 50 people with us on the march. Homes Not Jails, an organization who has done this kind of work for years with similar turnouts even tried to include wording about ldquo;occupyingrdquo; just to tag on some of the trendy ldquo;occupyrdquo; wording./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" ldquo; Its centered on money, and the middle-class white people who launched theses occupations have lost access to money and so thatrsquo;s why they care, that why they are showing up- and thatrsquo;s why corporate media is following them so closely, ldquo; Tony weighed in./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" So is that it? Are the issues of span data-scayt_word="houselessness" data-scaytid="17"houselessness/span/eviction, span data-scayt_word="po’lice" data-scaytid="14"porsquo;lice/span murder and profiling, migration/immigration, General assistance/welfare cuts, disability, gender and span data-scayt_word="criminalization" data-scaytid="15"criminalization/span of poverty too messy, confusing and not ldquo;grant-sexyrdquo;? Are the street newspaper vendors and peoples already on the street sleeping on the next corner from the ldquo;occupationsrdquo; too overwhelming to deal with and considered not central to ldquo;the movementrdquo;?span style=""nbsp; /spanOr is it just that similar to what revolutionary span data-scayt_word="wobyn" data-scaytid="18"wobyn/span span data-scayt_word="artista" data-scaytid="19"artista/span Melanie Cervantes pointed out two weeks ago as she was helping to formulate the recent Oakland span data-scayt_word="“decolonization”" data-scaytid="20"ldquo;decolonizationrdquo;/span action (that launched beautifully with a prayer and recognition of span data-scayt_word="Ohlone" data-scaytid="21"Ohlone/span first nation peoples) ldquo;Racial justice needs to be at the center of this span data-scayt_word="decolonization" data-scaytid="22"decolonization/span span data-scayt_word="movement.”" data-scaytid="16"movement.rdquo;/span/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" So perhaps thatrsquo;s it, as the movement continues to grow and formulate its crucial to make poverty and class, disability, span data-scayt_word="eldership" data-scaytid="23"eldership/span and language justice central to the movement. Even if its not so easy and clean and simple to do. With a true recognition that some people can be there and some people canrsquo;t. That just because poor peoples are constantly occupied with child care, SSI checks, span data-scayt_word="ebt" data-scaytid="24"ebt/span cards, CPS requirements, ICE enforcement and substance abuse, it doesnrsquo;t mean we donrsquo;t have solutions and a voice and a dream/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Later, on in this same morning, Several members of POOR Magazine family walked with the indigenous peoples day march sponsored by AIM-West ndash; where I met elder indigenous fighter Antonio Gonzalez, ldquo;Everyone is an Indian, thatrsquo;s how I am framing the ldquo;occupationsrdquo; we are all occupied, so we went down to the Foreclose Wall Street action and spoke and invited people to join us today in this span data-scayt_word="march.”" data-scaytid="25"march.rdquo;/span He concluded with a smile on his face. I listened hopefully but noticed that once again, our marches, the marches in honor of indigenous peoples, migrant peoples, span data-scayt_word="houseless" data-scaytid="26"houseless/span peoples, span data-scayt_word="po’liced" data-scaytid="27"porsquo;liced/span harassed peoples remain only barely attended, barely seen, rarely heard about. And albeit beautiful, like this one with so many prayerful dances and drums and span data-scayt_word="rythems" data-scaytid="28"rythems/span and words for span data-scayt_word="Pachamama" data-scaytid="29"Pachamama/span organized by Tony and Aim-West, today was no different/p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" Meanwhile in Egypt which went through the power of span data-scayt_word="Tahir" data-scaytid="30"Tahir/span Square only a few months ago launched as a resistance to corrupt government, just openly killed and attacked hundreds of Coptic protestors trying to resist religious persecution and harassment. Perhaps this genocide happened again and with so much velocity because the span data-scayt_word="Tahir" data-scaytid="31"Tahir/span Square resistance movements didnrsquo;t work long and hard enough to include, listen, involve and integrate everyone. Perhaps because it was easier to keep it a ldquo;cleanrdquo; movement, with simple demands, it began to be another example of exclusionary organizing which has now resulted in the continued persecution of Coptic Christians which was happening for hundreds of years before span data-scayt_word="Tahir" data-scaytid="32"Tahir/span Square even popped off./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" So maybe what we can learn is that to make a movement for change truly powerful and deep and loving it must work to constantly open itself up, re-make its issues, slow itself down and think itself through, it, like all of us, must walk softly on span data-scayt_word="Pachamama" data-scaytid="33"Pachamama/span and always with humility, which i have heard peoples in the Oakland span data-scayt_word="decolonization" data-scaytid="34"decolonization/span action are trying to do./p p class="MsoNormal" nbsp;/p p class="MsoNormal" As well, to keep poverty and poor peoples voices central in any movement, it has to happen in creative ways. So many of us are a href="http://www.poormagazine.org/node/4109"caught up in two to three low and no wage jobs/a and/or street hustles just to keep our babies alive, we canrsquo;t be in ldquo;occupationrdquo; every day or sometimes even once a week, because our minds and bodies are occupied all the time, and we arenrsquo;t off the chase of these blood-stained span data-scayt_word="Amerikkkan" data-scaytid="37"Amerikkkan/span span data-scayt_word="dollaz" data-scaytid="38"dollaz/span yet. So maybe making space for monthly or bi-monthly or 1 hour weekly involvement and maybe some of the current ldquo;occupiersrdquo; could make a commitment to show up at actions and events that all of us span data-scayt_word="po" data-scaytid="39"po/span#39; and span data-scayt_word="po'liced" data-scaytid="40"po#39;liced/span span data-scayt_word="harrased" data-scaytid="41"harrased/span folks have been organizing around for ever, such as the upcoming Oct 22supspan data-scayt_word="nd" data-scaytid="42"nd/span/sup protest and march against span data-scayt_word="po’lice" data-scaytid="35"porsquo;lice/span brutality that will be in the span data-scayt_word="Bayview" data-scaytid="36"Bayview/span district of San Francisco on Oct 22supspan data-scayt_word="nd" data-scaytid="43"nd/span/sup - - another march that up to now has been lucky to garner 100 people. And while you are at it- say hi to POOR/span data-scayt_word="PNN" data-scaytid="44"PNN/span who will be there- We always have been and we always will./p
